Twenty Two and a Half Years...

Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced Friday to 22 and a half years in prison for the murder of George Floyd, more than one year after Floyd’s death sparked an international movement against police brutality.

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill, who presided over Chauvin’s murder trial, handed down a sentence of 270 months for charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s May 25, 2020, death. Chauvin received a credit of 199 days served in prison. A jury convicted him of the charges on April 20.

“What the sentence is not based on is emotion or sympathy,” Cahill said. “But at the same time, I want to acknowledge the deep and tremendous pain that all the families are feeling, especially the Floyd family. I’m not going to attempt to be profound or clever because it’s not the appropriate time. I’m not basing my sentence on public opinion. I’m not basing it on any attempt to send any messages.”

Me personally, he should've gotten more. My culture/community has gone through this time and time again where officers get away Scot-Free after beating the brakes off a black or brown person. I've also shared here my experience dealing with the police (I was stopped in front of my house and frisked and searched coming home from work in my scrubs all the while they knew I worked for the local hospital), so even as a professional despite all that, I'm still a target because cops have egos. That is why I believe in getting rid of qualified immunity. I want cops to walk on eggshells and actually do real police work and actually be careful how they conduct themselves with the average public.

But like clockwork, some of my white counterparts sure took the verdict quite personally on Facebook as if their own relative was going to jail. One even said "this is causing a racial divide," and all I could do is facepalm because this whole country has been in a racial divide since 1619. I mean look at the following video been a divide

67-68 years old when he gets out. So, it's nearly a life sentence for him.
Hopefully it doesn't stop here and police keep being held accountable.
