Two Atlanta officers fired for using Tasers on Black students have terminations overturned

The board found that the dismissals of the two officers, Ivory Streeter and Mark Gardner, violated city and police department ordinances and policies regarding due process, according to an attorney for the officers, Lance J. LoRusso.

The city did not conduct an investigation through the Office of Professional Standards before the June 1 firings, which is required, LoRusso told NBC News.

The mission of The Office of Professional Standards (OPS) is to protect and serve the public, employees, and offenders. This diverse office incorporates both administrative and criminal investigative functions in order to provide oversight for the leadership and staff of the GDC, while coordinating and collaborating with external local, state, and federal agencies and entities.

OPS is responsible for providing unbiased, uncompromising accountability, and results that reflect the highest professional standard. This office accomplishes its mission by recruiting the best and most qualified for the job, while promoting quality education and training. The office optimizes information, technology, and state of the art equipment and integrates it into the department’s systems and processes.

Until now everything is going according to correct procedure. The city fired the officers unlawfully as a PR stunt. The officers sued and got their terminations overturned. Now the OPS will investigate. Given the situation and the evidence they probably will find that the officers used excessive force and they will be fired again. They may receive back payment for the time between the first and new termination. That money will be worth the PR stunt.
