UN renews mandate of peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- The UN Security Council on Friday extended the mandate of the peacekeeping UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for another six months and called on Lebanon and Israel to end violations of a truce between the two countries.
Acting on the recommendations of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the 15-nation council unanimously adopted a resolution that renewed the peacekeeping operation until July 30.
UNIFIL was established in 1978 to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli troops from its northern neighbor, restore international peace and security and help the Lebanese government regain its authority over the area.
In its resolution, the council condemned the recent clashes between Lebanon's Hizbollah (party of god) guerrillas and Israeli troops, which left a UN military observer killed and another wounded.
The council expressed great concern about serious breaches of the withdrawal line, the interim border between Israel and Lebanon, and urged all parties concerned to put an end to these violations.
