One of our greatest challenges as experimenters is to support our ideas with proof. The proof is either provided by reproducible results or by undeniable fact or both. Still, the point remains that to support your beliefs, you need proof; but proof is very hard to come by, especially when you're dealing with Psi.
Everybody requires different levels of proof. Some are convinced by what they see. Other are only convinced if it's supported by mathematics. Some will even believe it simply by having a gut-feeling that it's true. One cannot cater to all of the levels of belief. Heck, there are still people who seriously believe that NASA never made it to the moon in 1969. Providing enough proof should never be your goal, unless you're testifying before court ^__^. Whether or not somebody believes you should never be a real problem unless you really care what they think. But for the common masses, psssht whatever.
However if you want to hold ground in the scientific community good solid, rational theories backed by steady positive results will do you a world of good and depending on who you are talking to, that can mean the difference between being laughed at or being applauded to.
If you can't tell by now, I have a unique way of thinking about things. I've been flatteringly told I have a masterful combination of intellect and humility. I try not to pummel my readers with what I think but rather allow them to draw the same conclusions I did. I do this through the presentation of facts and reasoning guided by discussion. With that in mind, I'd like to begin laying out the framework of what I've been dealing with in relation to understanding Psi. This framework is for all to consider and fill in as we all see fit. I feel it encompasses most of the aspects of Psi that elude us.
So let's get started.
Okay. In the last chapter, Understanding Psionics, I described that to move an object (which in the example was a toothpick floating in a bowl of water) with Psi, the energy needed to have certain qualities. Those who are well rounded in the world of Psionics can relate to this; Psi has properties that defy convention. It can pass through objects, travel as close as a centimeter away or as far as the other side of the world and further. It can be manipulated by thought but can also retain it; also it has the ability to control and even create other energies. If you read up on experiences other people have had, Psi must have these properties to produce such results. Some people have sent Psi-balls across the world only going off of a screen-name in a chat room. Others have moved small objects with telekinesis. Certain people who are extra sensitive to thought, can create a self-sustaining dynamic shield construct that can block excessive thought interference. Some have even effortlessly bent cutlery after softening the metal with their mind. And what's more, there are tens-of-thousands of people, on the internet alone, claiming to perform such feats. Either there is some crazy stuff in out water supply, or there is really something to this. Nevertheless, we need to look at this scientifically.
Okay, let's consider these basic properties that we can assume Psi must have due to the behavior and results we all observe.
1. Psi must be able to pass through objects, but still affect its target.
2. Psi must have virtually limitless range with little to no dispersion, yet travel at incredibly fast speeds or remain completely stationary.
3a. Psi must be able to react to, function on and retain thought.
3b. OR Psi must be constantly controlled by an internal mechanism of the mind.
4. Psi must be able to interact with, create and control other energies.
5. Psi must be quantifiable as it can be more or less powerful as needed.
If all of these were inherently true, you could explain every possible combination of Psionic skills with these properties. I believe that these basic five properties are the simplest and most complete set of qualities that Psi can have.
Now, we see the challenge; my goal is to make a model for Psi. A model would be a diagram or description of what Psi is. It would be able to describe how and why Psi is capable of doing what it does. It must be able to explain any scenario that Psi falls into. But most of all, it needs to be SIMPLE! That is the key. Psi is capable of doing so much that it must have a special way of having different qualities. Still, Psi challenges us with it odd behavior. If it can pass through matter, it must have little to no mass. But if it has no mass, how can if afflict force on an object? If it can be directed in any other way than a straight line that means that it can self-propel itself (which also explains its incredible range and speed). But if it propels itself, that means once it leaves the host, it has severed ties with it; so how can it still be manipulated? Perhaps there is always a link to it like a fly-by-wire missile. How is one able to make a Psi-ball at another location without sending it there? How is it able to seemingly retain thought? Does it store thought like a disk stores data with single bits of different polarity particles? Or is it always connected to the host by a link of some kind and is controlled in real time across this link? What qualities does it have that lets you empress an idea upon it and have it carry it out autonomously? How can you make heat with Psi, or even harder, consume heat to produce coolness? How is it possible to recognize and ping a person just by thinking of them? That would require a mechanism to identify and locate them
The questions go on and on but one thing holds true. If we are able to grasp the peculiarities of Psi to a point where we can apply it based on that knowledge, we will have incredible control over an amazing energy. It will most certainly lead us to the discovery of other, possibly greater things, like faster than light travel and even give us an understanding of multi-dimensional planes.
It is a daunting task, but I hope to, with the help of others, refine a solid understanding of Psi so we can forge ahead with a greater understanding and, even better, CREDIBILITY! This is a never ending project. There will always be new evidence as well as new ideas. It is up to us to help each other and fuel our collective minds. We need to discuss our views and ideas in an open forum and be willing to combine our best ideas and do experiments with them. Experimenting is very important. There are two parts to discovery theory and practice; one is nothing without the other. Let's make this work together.
