Bolivia crisis: Death toll rises as security forces overwhelm protesters near La Paz - CNN

(CNN)At least eight people have died following deadly clashes yesterday between Bolivian security forces and supporters of the ousted president Evo Morales.

The violence took place as Bolivian security services attempted to clear a path for gas tanks to leave the Senkata gas plant near La Paz on Tuesday.

In total, at least 31 people have been killed in political unrest sparked by a disputed presidential election on October 20. Morales denied any electoral fraud, but he eventually resigned under pressure from the military, and fled to Mexico where he was granted political asylum.

An interim government has taken power and vowed to hold new elections at "the earliest possible time," but Morales' supporters have echoed the longtime leader's claim that he was the victim of a coup -- and have since taken to the streets, where they've faced riot police and the military.

There's been a good deal of unrest in the world these days. Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, and now Bolivia.

A direct consequence of the current population levels, IMO. We are overtaxing our own ability to deal with plurality of factions and goals.

The apparent cause is different in different places, but the phenomenon is world wide with unrest breaking out in multiple countries.

Pretty much.

I find the similarities more informative than the differences, personally. Worldwide, there is growing political cynicism laced with a curious form of apathy.

People just don't expect their own elected representatives to be worth of their trust anymore, even when they voted for them. In a sense that is only fair, but it is also dangerous, as ever more truculent and radical groups levels of popularity that would be ludicrous just a few decades ago.
