US Senate blocks Obama gun background checks rule

"An Obama-era regulation that tightened gun checks on mentally-ill buyers has been blocked by the US Senate and could be signed into law by the White House.

The law stopped people who receive disability benefits from buying guns, affecting an estimated 75,000 people.

But Republicans, who control the Senate, argued it stigmatised the disabled and voted it down 57 to 43.

President Donald Trump is set to approve revoking the rule, his first action on guns since taking power.

It passed the House of Representatives last week.

After the Sandy Hook shooting tragedy which killed 20 children and six adults in 2012, President Barack Obama introduced a measure that required the Social Security Administration to report information on people with mental illness to the FBI.

In an interview with the BBC, Mr Obama said his inability to pass "meaningful" gun legislation was his biggest frustration."

So, what's your opinion on this ?

Interesting that a democrat voted nay along with the two independents. I will be interested to look at the voting records.

When I saw this pass across my news feed, my first thought "well, of course humph will approve this... otherwise he would be blocked from buying guns!" The other thoughts that have initially run through my mind are no more appropriate. Sometimes, my thoughts make me feel like a bad person.

The mentally ill have a right to defend themselves too. One guy shouldn't ruin it for all of them, especially since "sane" people kill people too. Besides, the Sandy hook guy could have been some sort of secret guvment operation to commit an atrocity and promote anti-gun legislation, as justification to cause the US to comply with the UN small arms treaty. But who knows.

If you can read this, you are as lucky as I am.
This might be one of those regulations that almost everyone supports, yet only a small minority get any real say. Why don't these politicians ever pay a price for this at the voting booth?

I imagine this is akin to a scenario where there's this glue on the back of a stamp that causes a higher percentage of people to get mouth cancer. . . Everyone seems to approve of regulations to safely change the formula. . .

But there are a few Stamp Collectors who are outraged for some reason, and demand the carcinogenic glue remain unchanged. . . After all, a few people in the late 18th century said it was cool . . .

There could also be magic fairies sprinkling pixie dust into the water supply of any conservative who buys into such vapid conspiracy theories that have 0 evidence. But who knows.

I do despair for US gun laws. There is a lot wrong with the UK but we are decades ahead on guns.
All the 'defence' excuses...but if no one had guns you don't have to defend yourself.

Simples.

Nobody does anything or goes anywhere in the UK without the government knowing about it, but its government does lots of things that its citizens cannot find out about. Some people in the US government think that is a good model to follow. The gun issue is related to the big brother issue.

This regulation, it is a blanket ban for anyone who receives disability from buying a firearm?

Sweet.
Now all you have to do is wave your hand and make all guns disappear.

Then there will be no guns.

Republicans are lobbied by the NRA and ammo/weapon manufacturers. Mentally ill people have cash, they should be allowed to purchase a gun. The 2A guarantees this

No one is willing to talk about the actual bill in question.

Just another **** and moan over guns threads.

Well, really, what could go wrong?

Obama brought those regulations in after the killing of so many children in Sandy Hook -- but everybody knows that lightning doesn't strike twice the same place, so of course it'll never happen again. Why worry?

(By the way, if you like fallacies, that one about lightning will appeal to you -- it is false, and lightning often strikes again in the same place.)

Surveys of those who refer to themselves as being Republican taken last year have it that the vast majority of them (around 80% I believe) feel background checks for the mentally ill dealing with guns need to be tougher. This just goes to show how powerful a subversive organization the "N.R.A." actually is.

This bill is simply nuts, and that's the nicest word I can use for it.
