VA to offer abortions!

I wonder how this will square with the Hyde amendment. I wager there will be more litigation. Also this is rife for elimination by Congress or a post-Biden Administration. While it is in place the number of those covered will be very small.

I guess you're thinking republicans will be in charge? And I guess you expect them to continue to push their prohibition of women's reproductive rights, which goes against the will of the people?

Please note the Hyde Amendment does not apply to federally taxpayer funded abortions of fetuses spawned by rape, incest, or to save the lives of impregnated mothers whose unwanted fetuses pose an imminent lethal hazard to their host carriers,

"The most recently enacted version of the Hyde Amendment (P.L. 117-103. Div. H, §§ 506–507), applicable for fiscal year (FY) 2022, prohibits covered funds to be expended for any abortion or to provide health benefits coverage that includes abortion. This restriction, however, does not apply to abortions of pregnancies that are the result of rape or incest (“rape or incest exception”), or where a woman would be in danger of death if an abortion is not performed (“life-saving exception”)"

If you read the article it is limited to veterans and their immediate families. Hmm, I might be wrong. I need some clarification:

"Under a new interim final rule, pregnant veterans and VA beneficiaries will be able to get abortions if their life or health would be in danger if the pregnancy went to term. Patients whose pregnancies were the result of rape or incest will also be eligible for abortions."

After reading that again it does appear to be limited to veterans and their beneficiaries.

EDIT: I followed the link in the quote and it does just apply to veterans and their beneficiaries. The run of the mill citizen is still SOL.

Well... VA benefits are limited to veterans and their immediate families, not just anyone.

I know. I was just making sure that people knew that this was not for everyone. I was a bit leery before I checked out the article since it did not make sense to me that people not associated with the military would be able to do this.

I would have thought "VA" should have been clear enough on that.

You can't be covered by a ford/chevy warranty if you buy a nissan.

I think it's a given the VA doesn't cover civilians.

True which sadly means that this is not much of a solution. It is still better than nothing and does give comfort and peace of mind to those in the military and their families. I worry about all the people that are at least temporarily shut out of these services.

I am still hoping for big things come November.
