Vets of RF, are you not bored yet?

Hello Vets of RF,

I just want to preface by saying this is not my first religious debate forums I have joined and from personal experience I can say that they are all the same, same talking points, and same argument and disagreements

This post and subsequent question is mainly for the vets of Religious Forums, the ones that have been here for years and have at least 3,000+ posts. I know this might be a bit hypocritical as I only have less than 600 however, please hear (or read) me out. I joined these forums in July of 2019 and was very active when I first started out then, started getting bored (more on that in a bit). While I have not been as active recently I still get on to see and read what’s being discussed.

Anyway, on to my main topic/question “Vets of RF, are you not bored yet?” I ask this question to all vets, Atheist and Theists (mainly Christian, Jews and Muslims) that are here because almost every topic, question and debate between these groups almost always come down to the exact few talking/arguing points. A few off the top of my head are morality, God, life (evolution), science and purpose. Even when someone posts something that initially sounds like its new or creative it ultimately only comes down to a very narrow scope that can be retraced back to what I just mentioned.

Even though I am not an Atheist nor Theist, I can pretty much answer with very precise accuracy what on their behalf when asked any question. “why are you an atheist” “Why are you a theist” “why is your god true” “Can you prove there is no god” “Can you prove god” “can science prove/disprove god” “where do you get your morals from” or anything along those line. I am not saying this in an effort to seem smart or like I know it all rather, I have read enough on RF to understand where they all stand, there starting point/foundation for an argument and pretty much understand how they’ve reach their conclusions.

So, with that said, Atheist and Theists, are you not bored yet of simply making the same case over and over just in different ways? And if you are not, do you think you ever will?

I am not bored of RF. Theres certainly some topics I am bored of though. So ones like those mentioned in the OP I just don't usually participate in (unless I get a wild hair, happens from time to time.)
Fortunately for me, there always seems to be enough variety of RFian as well as new growth in the established crowd that there's usually some new things to think about every week.

This year is my tenth on RF. I'm far from bored, and I enjoy doing staff work and serving the forum now as much as I did when I first became staff about nine years ago.

I have several friends I've known for many years thanks to this forum, and new members frequently come in and include ones that I end up becoming friends with or at least learning from. The debates themselves—while sometimes repetitive, as you noted—are just one aspect of RF for me, not to mention that with new people coming in so often, old subjects can still result in new ideas due to posts from newer members or older members who have changed their minds over the years.

I've been on RF through high school graduation, moving from one country to another, losing my grandmother, college graduation, and conscription, among other things. At this point, my attachment to the forum extends beyond the debates into personal territory, and I don't think that's about to change anytime soon.

That is true and that is also something i like about RF. I guess my post was mainly focused on the Atheist vs. Theist aspect that I did not acknowledged of focus on other parts of RF.

How could I ever grow bored of being the most intelligent and highly regarded person on the internet?

Thank you for your reply. 10 years, nice. I guess as a staff member your experience is a lot different than mine and I can see your attachment to the forum goes beyond someone like me who came here as part of a "journey"

It's not necessarily the discussions it's the people. I like the people. Even the ones I argue with like I did last night.

I am 100% with you everything you said however, i personally, just get bored of arguing the same point with the same people. I am not saying I am better or worse than you by any standard, just saying that I think i get bored easier than you do lol. Thank you for your reply.

You just need to lower your standards.
You can discuss any subject under the sun on RF. Start some interesting threads :)

RF is far better than the other food fights if been a member of. Not necessarily the subject matter although some is quite interesting to me, but the people, both theist and atheist whom i consider to be (at least) online friends are worth the almost 5 years of my hard earned life

Simple to answer. That is Life, doing things over and over

Some people even have sex, over and over

Same case, same position

Not sure how many people will understand this, but I was bored -- or at least almost bored -- with most of the topics on RF by the time I had finished lurking for a few hours and decided to register. That was over 16 years ago, and RF's topics are now and then a little less boring, but I'm usually gone from even my own threads before the 20th post, especially since there is an inevitable inertia that quickly channels any new topic into old, familiar, and worn ways of looking at things. But the people are an entirely different matter. There have always been at least a few fascinating people on RF, and often more than a few.

Sometimes I think the repetition is a good thing. New voices can chime in on old topics, but also going over the same thing can be beneficial as you're forced to think and rethink your positions; when certain questions may be asked in other ways you may find yourself thinking about your answer in another way, too. My answer to certain topics on RF is not nearly the same as it would have been 5 years ago.

As one of the top posters by virtue of posting many many items in two joke threads, I echo that it's the people.

I know, for example, that @Wu Wei is going to complain about his job, his body and go on endlessly about picnic baskets and mauling people. I know that @Revoltingest has never lived up to his sobriquet but has managed to revolt many by his promotion of haggis and bacon as well as stating unpopular ideas with conviction. I'm sure they can give me the same compliments, of course.

I do skip threads that are retreads of hundreds of similar threads mostly, but there are enough that cause me to think that I'm happy to be here and posting.

I find it helps to occasionally not log in for a few weeks or months. It stops the most frequently discussed topics from getting too stale.

It also means nobody is ever certain where you are or when you'll next appear.

There's discussion here on a variety of topics, and you get to know people. I met my husband on RF.

Since late 2019, I've begun dropping out during periods when I'm inspired to write poetry, showing back up during dry spells.
