Visions from Paradise: Spring 2009

Well things are budding with abandon here at the YmirGF burrows and bolt holes. I thought I'd share a few images I took today. Hope you like them.

This is one Rhody on the from the lower gardens.

This is the 2nd set of stars I built last summer. The hand railing was my first project of its kind and seems to have handled the winter very well.

DSC00472-B.jpg

An 18 year old Arbutus tree that is the highlight of the middle garden section.

DSC00455-B.jpg

The "Daffy" bed. I took this image a few days ago and already the scene is punctuated with about 50 brightly coloured tulips. The bed is approx. 40' x 10' and contains approximately 1200 bulbs!

A riot of colour that is between the Arbutus and the Daffy bed.

Constant Companions:

A "hummer" having a nice light snack. We often get about 8 PER feeder on any given night. They seem to infest the area shortly before twilight and are extremely territorial, lol. THAT is sort of amusing considering their tiny size.

DSC00490-B.jpg

One of the "ladies" out for a stroll in the triangle out front of the house.

DSC00477-B.jpg

Another one of the regular "ladies" keeping the neighbours lawn nice and trim.

The best for last:
DALLAS APPLE at one year old!!! She is such a cutie!!!

That first doe seems to have an awefully round belly....
Hehe. After I took the picture, she began to walk away and I asked her if she was preggers. She just looked at me... so I took her silence as a "Yes". No doubt, she should have danced all night.

Wow! What a nice morning treat to enjoy while drinking coffee. :)

The rock stairs look ultra cool, Paul. And, I have to also appreciate the work you put into the project.....I imagine it took weeks to complete.

That is by far the best looking display of daffodils I've seen in ages. I'm sure it puts Butchart Gardens to shame.

Thanks for sharing! :)

It did take a fair amount of time, considering I didn't know what I was doing. I should clarify though, I rebuilt the steps, rather than cutting the path. The steps were designed for nimble people and were very far apart. What I did was add about 4-6 inches using tiles and cement. The handrail alone took a few weeks as I am not really comfortable working with power tools, so I did most of it by hand. Getting the bark off the handrail was a bit tedious.... and then the endless sanding... and endless coating with exterior eurethane. Then of course, the mods needed to make it all fit together because my measurements were a bit off to start with, lol. From top to bottom, the whole thing is about 20 long, so I had to sculpt the trees at the bottom to create a canopy effect. When looking at the entrance from out in the lower garden it looks like a dark tunnel. It's pretty cool.

Soon, I will get back to finishing my stone bench on the 2nd property. This is an area that is quite large with intersecting paths and the bench will be the focal point. It is S-shaped and about 8 feet by 4 feet and will be about 5 feel high with an 18 table in the centre... all made out of concrete and stone. It will be done by the end of summer, hopefully.

Today I spent the day putting "Bird's eye" gravel on all the paths over on the 2nd lot. All in all there is enough to cover 650 sq. feet and when it dries it is nice an white, so it contrast wonderfully with the mulch the paths cut through. I get to finish it all tomorrow and then it is on to "the bench" again. *sigh* If only I could wiggle my nose and it would all just be done. It's a lot of work, lol... but tons o' fun.

Paradise indeed! The color of blossoms with the beauty of nature's creatures and man's handiwork. Thanks for taking time out for us.
