What do you think about the Voodoo religion?
The idea of voodoo is a very clever thing it is - like most religions - a way to control you as subtly and carefully as the creators possibly could but watching or reinacting voodoo is just a basic magic show but most of the time it ends up with people actually being killed. It starts off as an idea like all women who could do basically anything being witches and ends up with every woman who had a black cat as pet being killed. I hope this got my point accross i'm not sure. :S

I used to practise Santeria Voudoun (The form of Voodoo practised in South American)

Voodoo is VERY superstitious... its the superstition that makes it so powerful.

Using Rum and Cigars... yes... its less control and direct - more bribe and reward ;)

Voodoo is IMO much like any indigenous religion; it has cultural and historical value, if nothing else. Do I believe their deities are real? Sure, as real as mine or yours or anyone's. Maman Brigitte is particularly compelling to me, since her history gets mixed up in our fire goddess Brighid, and yet she bears many characteristics of our war/death goddess, the Morrighan. Irish indentured servants/slaves intermarried with the natives, and produced a sort of hybrid religion, which is my own theory of why there's a commonality there.

I tend to be a bit ambivalent about voodoo because I do not approve of any religion that manipulates people with fear; and voodoo has gained that reputation. I'm not knowledgeable enough to say whether the reputation is deserved or not, and I reserve judgment on practitioners until I know them well enough to understand their motivation and attraction to the practice.

Dunno how much that helps...

I looked into Voodoo some. It is too highly superstitious for me. It does seem to be a "dark" religion, but from my studies (which is very little) it is not so dark in Africa. It is more dark in Louisiana. For some reason, it seems the southern parts of the USA has made it own relgion out of it. It seems quite dark but again still highly supersitious. I don't know...I am certainly no fan of it, however, I would not mock anyone that did practise it nor would I fear them.
