Anybody else ever have a cashier insist that everybody must be carded when purchasing alcohol?

Two hours at Walmart, which I dislike to begin with, then the lady tells me we can't get the beer I lugged around because my wife looks under 40 and doesn't have her purse with ID's and such. After 20 minutes in line and a good 5 minutes getting the other stuff rung up also.

I could maybe understand if we looked like teenagers. We just left everything there :run:

Edit:

I think I didn't word it very well...I had my ID and credit card waiting the whole time. The wife was sort of off to the side with our three kids and I was handing her the light bags to sit in the cart.

I don't mind being carded at all, being the individual who was carrying the alcohol and is paying for it, but it seems dumb to card every adult as if we are barely-legal, college kids trying to hook up the under aged

I used to work primarily as a cashier. I don't know about Wal-Mart, but where I work, you're constantly watched (cameras, managers, etc.). Even if an individual is obviously older than 18 or 21, if we don't check ID, we can be seriously reprimanded or even fired.

But, I do agree. It's ridiculous having to ask somèone who is obviously in their 40s for their ID.

As long as one person in the group has ID I wouldn't see a problem with it.

Do you mean everyone in the group, not just the person making the purchase? If you mean that, no. I've never run into that.

I can understand a cashier carding every purchase of alcohol -- but only one person -- the one paying.

edit: Come to think of it, we did get carded the last time we were in Walmart, with a rather large purchase, that happened to include beer and wine. It didn't stop us from making the purchase, since we both have our driver's license on us, so we joked about it after we left. He has grey in his beard. I'm 50. I think I look pretty good for my age -- but not THAT GOOD. :D

Yeah...same here.
My son put the wine bottle on the counter out of the cart.
I was buying....not him.
He got carded anyway.

He happens to be of age.
Makes me wonder what would happen if he had still been younger?

Friend Sees,

Sorry to learn about your disappointment and reason thereof however though live in India always carry an ID because we are not sure who is a terrorist or when and where they strike besides in any security check situation an ID helps. Since carry a purse and Credit cards etc. why not an Id card?

Take Care.

Why not just look the guy in the face and let him buy?

So WHAT if the boy wanted to help unload the cart?!!!!!
It's MY hand holding over the money!

Did I hear someone say....let's be reasonable?

I'm 60, & was carded recently.
Having many employees involved in many transactions makes one vulnerable to a lapse in
judgement. And Johnny Law can pounce severely when it happens, so I'm not surprised by
their being sticklers on ID. Government creates the environment, & businesses just respond.

In that case, if they refused to sell you alcohol with proper ID, simply because your wife and children did not have ID, that seems to be an issue to take up with the management. I can't imagine that they don't sell alcohol ever to people with children present with them shopping. That would be very strange to me.

Oh! was just giving a global scenario but am serious that an ID helps in any security situations even visiting offices which I do professionally even during railway journeys where we do online reservations ID is a must as otherwise black marketeers will buy tickets and sell them on higher rates [huge population here]

Sorry have digressing from the OP.
Personal take is CARRY an ID ALWAYS and learn from life directly move ahead, follow the rules.

When the id tag is installed in a micro chip....in your hand....

At the Wegmans stores in New Jersey they have a big sign in front of the cash registers. All customers must provide proof of age. They don't budge if you don't have proof they won't sell you the liquor.
