Water tank adjacent to masjids mandatory?

i am not quite an expert on islamic matters. so excuse this fundamental query of mine. i have heard that there is a water tank usually built at ground level in front of a masjid for vazu.i have heard that all the great masjids built by the mogul kings in india have this feature.for example the moti and jame-masjids in delhi.the fatehpuri masjid in agra.the jama in lahore too has a beautiful tank in its premises my muslim friends tell me. is this a mandatory feature to be strictly observed when building a masjid. are there tanks in the early masjids built during the first three caliphates in the midle-east where there has been great scarcity of water? or the masjids in samarkand, bukhara, istambul? or is it a feature in indian masjids where heavy rainfalls ensured a steady supply of water all year round?

This is not a mandatory feature by a long way! You will find many masjids even in India which dont have water tanks.
