I am just thinking, self punishment works, if outside punishment works too.

Punishment almost never genuinely improves a person, if that's what you're thinking. B. F. Skinner scientifically demonstrated the truth of that back in the 60s. So, if you want to argue that punishment improves someone, argue with him.
