Went to my very first Baptist service tonight

And it was off the chain, awesome. My parents and fiance ...we all went together, and even though my dad is a staunch Catholic, he really enjoyed the service. The sermon was just so moving and relevant. I love the Catholic mass in a different way, but just don't practice that since returning to faith, and feel called to a more non-denominational type of fellowship.

I was surprised at how brave the Pastor was with his message...openly talked about sin, hell and addiction and how we need Jesus, etc. This isn't a message heard much in the Catholic Church, it's like the priests are afraid to bring up tough, everyday topics. A friend of mine told me about this church, and she thought I'd like it. Dare I say, I could see myself going there routinely. :)

Anyways, just sharing! Merry Christmas!

I was actually invited to a service at church for Christmas Eve. I declined and went out to feed the homeless on the street instead.

Guess which one was a more valuable use of my time?

I'm glad you did this. Going to church for an hour doesn't take one away from doing that, though. This is the DIR section, please be respectful at least?

I'm wondering what he had to say about ' hell '?
Gospel writer Luke wrote that on the day Jesus' died that Jesus went to hell - Acts of the Apostles 2:27; Acts of the Apostles 2:31-32
Jesus was well educated in the old Hebrew Scriptures teaching that biblical hell is temporary - Psalms 16:10 - otherwise Jesus would still be in biblical hell.
Also, Jesus knew Psalms 6:5; Psalms 13:3; Psalms 115:17; Psalms 146:4 which teach only sleep in death, as Jesus taught sleep in death - John 11:11-14
The heavenly Jesus now has the keys to unlock hell - Revelation 1:18
So, during Jesus' coming 1,000 year governmental rulership over earth the unconscious dead - Ecclesiastes 9:5 - will be awakened from biblical hell the grave- Acts of the Apostles 24:15
Then, as Revelation 20:13-14 mentions after everyone in the Bible's hell is ' delivered up ' (KJV) meaning resurrected out of biblical hell, then emptied-out hell is cast empty into a symbolic ' second death ' for vacated hell. As far as the unrepentant wicked they will be destroyed forever - Psalms 92:7- never wake up again - Jeremiah 51:57

He didn't go into THAT much detail :D

I go to a Baptist church every week. We sing, hear about missionaries our church supports, and our pastor teaches rather preaches so it's great fun. As for feeding the hungry, our church does that, too.

Sounds good. I would personally much rather hear a pastor that teaches useful things that can help us in life than the screamers.

I was raised a Southern Baptist so I know what you mean. There are times I feel that way about my church, it's like it doesn't connect to anything. I prefer to think of myself as non-denominational, reformed, and slightly evangelical. However, I did go to the Southern Baptist Convention in 2015 and it was awesome.

I recently bought Religion Saves and Doctrine by Mark Driscoll and they are amazing (I don't care what people think about him or the fact he's not the leader of a megachurch anymore). You should check him out, he came out of a Catholic background.

Sense the Baptist church doesn't except those who just want to visit or who are not already decided to believe their way you mustve already decided you believe like them along time ago. I visited my old Baptist church from childhood 2 years ago, I'm not Christian but just decided I wanted to go visit sense I hadn't been in a long time . The minster got up there wednessday night service it was a small group of people and said that a mentally ill mentally challenged person was wanting a place to go to to socialize .She needed some structure some Priest recommended her for that church and the guy told him no that's not what the church is for agree? Well mentally challeneged people have no way of understanding the gospel they cant legally join the church and know what salvation only the church can accept them that's all that can be done so the Baptists out here don't minster to people who don't already know the gospel.

I asked them what was the requifrements to join the church theys aid theyw anted people who were already commited to jesus and only people to visit who were open to becoming Christians and believe full blown in every Baptist belief. But some people don't understand all the Christian beliefs. My sister says the Baptists of Dallas have become very picky about who they let come and go and be a part of their church because they want only commited people who know all the tenants and commited first. But some people dotn understand, ive got mental health issues tennents of faith don't make sense to me. But the Baptists want perfect people and the reason why my sister says is that because of church bombings people who have pulled shootings at church theyre paranoid and only want people who have sold out to the Baptist beliefs who are ready to sell out to Christianity when they go. But the real world doesn't work like that and personally I think they've lost the gospel of Christ,Jesus ministered to everyone including mentally challenged folks who didn't have the understanding. Theyre wrong. They will run people out that they don't think are doing things the way the church teaches.

Hi Diedre thanks for the wonderful point. It seems rare to find Christian theists on the forum that will take light from any lamp that is available. I'm glad that you are starting to see the principle that knowledge and inspiration and spiritual advancement may come from unexpected sources.

Good journey Diedre

Do you think that baptism is necessary?
Interesting question and I will give you the Catholic version:

1. Baptism is a sacrament of the Church and removes the stain of original sin and all other sins from us.
2. Salvation is possible without baptism but as a believer you should desire it.
3. Jesus specifically gave us two sacraments to remember him, baptism and communion.

I have no way of knowing your situation but I would encourage you to pray and discern about the possibility of being baptized. My experience is that it will enrich your life and help seal your heart for Christ.

Ive been in a bad mood with Baptists for awhile because Ive had bad experiences in childhood so I'm sorry if I was rough on you.

However I have to say last year in my Moms AA meeting the Celebrate Recovery program and another church which was a community church that claimed Baptist church beliefs that has a CR program too in my area talked to me seemed to let me know that they are the only ones for me and no other church could help me.

So my question to you is do Baptists from the Baptist church, are they able to except light from the Catholic church and other sources of light? I'm telling you that in Texas they would not. Theyre it theyre the only ones nobody else counts.

Not only that but my sister who is married to a Hispanic whos family is Catholic, has admitted her lifelong membership to Baptists churches are fading shes almost not going mostly because of the HATRED that our Baptist churches teach about the Catholic churches, the Pagan church that's of the devil going to hell in their words.

Catholics traditionally have their biases. I don't think this is a ''baptist as opposed to another denomination'', issue.
