The wickedness of this man is without bounds.

I heard that newspapers in the surrounding towns don't print anything about him or his church.

- Abuse of children by clergy.
- High taxes
- Big government
- Wars which generate the funerals they frequent
- Violations of the Constitution
- Wikileaks
- Etc, etc, etc
But none of those are specifically related to hatred of gays so the Westboro Church isn't interested.

The only pattern I see with their demonstrations is their anti-gay bigotry and picketing at celebrity funerals whether there's any connection to gays and lesbians or not. I just read on Wiki' that in 2007 they picketed a local appliance store because it sold Swedish vacuum cleaners. Why? Well, it was Westboro's response and support of Ake Green, a Swedish clergyman who was vocally critical of homosexuality and consequently prosecuted (then acquitted) of hate speech. Later Green denounced the Westboro Church and they in turn branded Green a "traitor".

My point being that this insane hate-cult has only to see a vague connection to gay rights or any celebrity connection to show up with picket signs. They've long crossed that border from threatening to performance art imo; even the fanatical right in this country rolls their eyes at Phelps and his small band of 70 or so cultists. Their "protests" are so prolific and their choice of targets is so bizarre- like Elizabeth Edwards and Swedish vacuum cleaners- even the most devout hate monger tends to wonder what the hell Westboro Church is going on about.

I wouldn't be surprised if after Phelps dies his corpse rises from the grave and protests his own funeral.

I think the WBC is against most of these things, too.

Nobody reads the fine print. Their selection of websites is rather interesting:

I prefer to save my sanity rather than click any of those links.

And to think they've been around since at least 1955....

That's the thing: they're rapidly approaching the point where they're going to self-destruct, IMO.

I heard an interview with Nathan Phelps, one of Fred Phelps sons, and who left the day he turned 18. He mentioned some very interesting things:

- Fred Phelps believes that the Rapture will occur within his lifetime, so the WBC has no succession plan.
- As Fred gets older and his health declines, his daughter Shirley has become more and more the "public face" of the WBC and the de facto leader-in-waiting.
- However, because of their belief that women must be subservient to men, it would go against the WBC's doctrines to have her be the official leader, so the implication is that one of his sons must become leader... but none of them have really taken any sort of leadership role in the WBC so far - they've left it all to Shirley.

My hope is that when Fred Phelps dies, one of two things will happen:

- there will be a split, with some following Shirley and some sticking to their current teachings and following one of the Phelps sons. The two groups will switch their focus from picketing funerals to sniping at each other.

- there will be a smooth-ish transition of power to one of Phelps' reluctant sons, and over time, the WBC will simply fade over time due to mismanagement and apathy.

Either way, I think that when Fred Phelps dies, a significant portion of the group will become disillusioned and leave.

I don't like to wish for the death of anyone, but in this case, I find it kinda hard not to.
