If you were asked to characterize humanity as in its infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, or old age, how would you characterize it? Why?

Childhood.
We thirst for knowledge, as we would in adolescence, but have yet to hit the rebellious years.
That time will come when humankind's ability to automate things hits a certain peak, as will our conflicts with one another.

Adulthood will come when we have a somewhat deeper understanding of our universe, along with the ability to better manipulate our existence.

Old age will be around the time we can leave our galaxy and our understanding is as high as it can be.
That will be a very long time from now, to say the least.

I say adulthood. Unfortunately, I have a American lens on where we are just getting out if adolesence to be an adult qlas many if us are starting to find spiritual foundations. Id say less advanaged countries are old age. They have the foundatio(s) but are slowly getting weaker with age.

I don't undrestand how it could be anything other than all of the above?

As far as biological evolution is concerned, every species that exists today is as "evolved" as all the others. Thinking about species as if they have "stages" like this is not right. It perpetuates the myth of progress, which isn't how nature works (including human nature).

Childhood.
I am a believer in the spiritual evolution of the individual and the species and our advancement is guided by more advanced beings (play 'Twilight Zone' theme song if you must). Using a football analogy, one source I respect tells us we are at about our own 12 yard line at this time.

I would say between 6 and 7 years old. We will know when humanity will turn 8 when about 50% of its members stopped believing in Santa...or his ontological equivalents. ;)

So... it seems answers to this question are simply reflective of the values of the speaker and the stories they like to tell themselves. Gotta say, not a fan of some of the stories being told in this thread. Much to nasty and negative for my liking.

I find the analogy to be too problematic to answer in any meaningful or consistent way.

However, it's still an interesting question.

As a whole we are at childhood level. Wars still exist and tribal barriers are going strong and work for advantage of groups that use them. We aren't at the point of building a Star Trek -type unified planet. I see some movements are taking us back to points I thought we might surpass soon. Many individuals are at adulthood stage so there is hope.

Without knowing where the Finish Line lies there's no way of telling where humanity is.

Infancy, if even that. We have not even quite decided that it is to our advantage not to behave as animals do.

... older than the entire physical universe.

At least some of us are. Though not all.
Some spirits are in their first lives as humans,
some have been relegated to dogs, etc...

Had to vote other.

We don't 'progress' in a linear fashion. We are what we are, and will continue to be so.

We just mistake technological progress for humanity's progress
