What are Angels per Quran and hadiths?

Angels were believed in by polytheists, but not in a proper way. They worshiped what would be termed Angels by Christians and Jews while the polytheists of the time and place Mohammad (s) was raised in, saw them as not mere Angels but gods and mostly as daughters of God.

Did We create the angels females while they were present? | As-Saaffaat : 150

Be aware that it is out of their mendacity that they say, | As-Saaffaat : 151

Allah has begotten [offsprings],’ and they indeed speak a falsehood. | As-Saaffaat : 152

Has He preferred daughters to sons? | As-Saaffaat : 153

What is the matter with you? How do you judge? | As-Saaffaat : 154

وَجَعَلُوا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْجِنَّةِ نَسَبًا ۚ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمَتِ الْجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ | And they have set up a kinship between Him and the jinn, while the jinn certainly know that they will be presented [before Him]. | As-Saaffaat : 158

I would argue, here, as in many other places, Angels are subset of Jinn. That is their creation and race is Jinn, while an Angel means a saintly Jinn. I would argue that God's Angels or close Angels are chosen like Prophets, while Angels are not necessarily chosen by God and can deviate as did Iblis.

One of the contentions that disbelievers had, was saying, if God wanted to guide us, he would send Angels.

Why do you not bring us the angels should you be truthful?!’ | Al-Hijr : 7

إِذْ جَاءَتْهُمُ الرُّسُلُ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا اللَّهَ ۖ قَالُوا لَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّنَا لَأَنْزَلَ مَلَائِكَةً فَإِنَّا بِمَا أُرْسِلْتُمْ بِهِ كَافِرُونَ | When the apostles came to them, before them and in their own time, saying, ‘Worship no one except Allah!’ They said, ‘Had our Lord wished, He would have sent down angels [to us]. We indeed disbelieve in what you have been sent with.’ | Fussilat : 14

وَلَا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ عِنْدِي خَزَائِنُ اللَّهِ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ الْغَيْبَ وَلَا أَقُولُ إِنِّي مَلَكٌ وَلَا أَقُولُ لِلَّذِينَ تَزْدَرِي أَعْيُنُكُمْ لَنْ يُؤْتِيَهُمُ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا ۖ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ ۖ إِنِّي إِذًا لَمِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ | I do not say to you that I possess the treasuries of Allah, neither do I know the Unseen neither I do I claim to be an angel, neither do I say of those who are despicable in your eyes that Allah will not grant them any good—Allah knows best what is in their hearts—for then I would indeed be a wrongdoer.’ | Hud : 31

Mohammad (s) similarly says that in Surah Anaam.

قُلْ لَا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ عِنْدِي خَزَائِنُ اللَّهِ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ الْغَيْبَ وَلَا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ إِنِّي مَلَكٌ ۖ إِنْ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا يُوحَىٰ إِلَيَّ ۚ قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الْأَعْمَىٰ وَالْبَصِيرُ ۚ أَفَلَا تَتَفَكَّرُونَ | Say, ‘I do not say to you that I possess the treasuries of Allah, nor do I know the Unseen, nor do I say to you that I am an angel. I follow only what is revealed to me.’ Say, ‘Are the blind one and the seer equal? So do you not reflect?’ | Al-An'aam : 50

And says:

قُلْ لَوْ كَانَ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَلَائِكَةٌ يَمْشُونَ مُطْمَئِنِّينَ لَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَلَكًا رَسُولًا | Say, ‘Had there been angels in the earth, walking around and residing [in it like humans do], We would have sent down to them an angel from the heaven as apostle.’ | Al-Israa : 95

In Surah Hijr, an interesting conversation occurs about "door to the sky".

Why do you not bring us the angels should you be truthful?!’ | Al-Hijr : 7

We do not send down the angels except with due reason, and then they will not be granted any respite. | Al-Hijr : 8

Indeed We have sent down the Reminder, and indeed We will preserve it. | Al-Hijr : 9

Certainly We sent before you to former communities, | Al-Hijr : 10

وَمَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ | and there did not come to them any apostle but that they used to deride him. | Al-Hijr : 11

That is how We let it pass through the hearts of the guilty: | Al-Hijr : 12

لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ الْأَوَّلِينَ | they do not believe in it, and the precedent of the ancients has already passed. | Al-Hijr : 13

And were We to open for them a gate of the sky, so that they could go on ascending through it, | Al-Hijr : 14

لَقَالُوا إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَارُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَسْحُورُونَ | they would surely say, ‘Indeed our visions are intoxicated; indeed, we are a bewitched lot.’ | Al-Hijr : 15

Certainly We have appointed houses in the sky and adorned it for the onlookers, | Al-Hijr : 16

وَحَفِظْنَاهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ رَجِيمٍ | and We have guarded it from every outcast Satan, | Al-Hijr : 17

إِلَّا مَنِ اسْتَرَقَ السَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ مُبِينٌ | except someone who may eavesdrop, whereat there pursues him a manifest flame. | Al-Hijr : 18

Here the flame is important to keep in mind, because this is not a literal flame, and so when it says:

وَالْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَاهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَأَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مَوْزُونٍ | And We spread out the earth, and cast in it firm mountains, and We grew in it every kind of balanced thing, | Al-Hijr : 19

وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَايِشَ وَمَنْ لَسْتُمْ لَهُ بِرَازِقِينَ | and made in it [various] means of livelihood for you and for those whom you do not provide for. | Al-Hijr : 20

وَإِنْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا عِنْدَنَا خَزَائِنُهُ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَعْلُومٍ | There is not a thing but that its sources are with Us, and We do not send it down except in a known measure. | Al-Hijr : 21
وَأَرْسَلْنَا الرِّيَاحَ لَوَاقِحَ فَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمُوهُ وَمَا أَنْتُمْ لَهُ بِخَازِنِينَ | And We send the fertilizing winds and send down water from the sky providing it for you to drink and you are not maintainers of its resources. | Al-Hijr : 22

Indeed it is We who give life and bring death and We are the inheritors. | Al-Hijr : 23

Certainly We know the predecessors among you and certainly We know the successors, | Al-Hijr : 24

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ | and indeed it is your Lord who will resurrect them. Indeed, He is all-wise, all-knowing. | Al-Hijr : 25

Certainly We created man out of a dry clay [drawn] from an aging mud, | Al-Hijr : 26

This is talking about part of the wisdom of creating mankind, and why Messengers are raised from mankind. But this going back to Angel talk, it's obvious when it says:

وَالْجَانَّ خَلَقْنَاهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ مِنْ نَارِ السَّمُومِ | and We created the jinn earlier, out of a piercing fire. | Al-Hijr : 27

It's the same spiritual flame type, talked about earlier. And it's obvious Angels are a subset of Jinn. And once upon a time Angels (a) were tried with Adam (a) who is superior to them:

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ | When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed I am going to create a human out of a dry clay [drawn] from an aging mud. | Al-Hijr : 28

فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ | So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down in prostration before him.’ | Al-Hijr : 29

Thereat the angels prostrated, all of them together, | Al-Hijr : 30

إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ | except Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated. | Al-Hijr : 31

He said, ‘O Iblis! What kept you from being among those who have prostrated?’ | Al-Hijr : 32

We can conclude Angels are not like Adam (a) created from clay or else Iblis would not have said:

قَالَ لَمْ أَكُنْ لِأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ | Said he, ‘I will not prostrate before a human whom You have created out of a dry clay [drawn] from an aging mud.’ | Al-Hijr : 33

And God because he was vain and arrogant said:

قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ | He said, ‘Begone hence, for you are indeed an outcast, | Al-Hijr : 34

More will be posted about context of Angels from both Quran and hadiths.

Angels were believed in by polytheists, but not in a proper way. They worshiped what would be termed Angels by Christians and Jews while the polytheists of the time and place Mohammad (s) was raised in, saw them as not mere Angels but gods and mostly as daughters of God.

Let me ask you this Question.

Why God spoke to Moses and Jesus without sending them Angel Gabriel, but when He wanted to reveal Quran, He did that through Gabriel?

Anyways, according to Quran, one meaning of Angel is the Messenger of God:

"All praise is for Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, Who made angels ˹as His˺ messengers with wings—two, three, or four. He increases in creation whatever He wills. Surely Allah is Most Capable of everything." 35:1

But here "wing" is a metaphor.
Here is the evidence:

"Strain not thine eyes toward that which We cause some wedded pairs among them to enjoin, and be not grieved on their account, and lower thy wing for the believers" 15:88

Allah says, Muhammad has Wing. From this we understand, Allah spoke with Metaphors.

Now, as people of the past did not understand the Metaphorical expressions in the Words of God, they imagined that, there are some beings who look like humans but have wings like birds.

Can a bird fly to a far Galaxy with its wings?

beside that, Angel have other meanings as well. Another meaning is the Saints.

This is a post from the past:

وَجَعَلُوا الْمَلَائِكَةَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ عِبَادُ الرَّحْمَٰنِ إِنَاثًا ۚ أَشَهِدُوا خَلْقَهُمْ ۚ سَتُكْتَبُ شَهَادَتُهُمْ وَيُسْأَلُونَ | They have made the angels—who are servants of the All-beneficent—females. Were they witness to their creation? Their testimony will be written down and they shall be questioned. | Az-Zukhruf : 19

This comes in context of:

أَمِ اتَّخَذَ مِمَّا يَخْلُقُ بَنَاتٍ وَأَصْفَاكُمْ بِالْبَنِينَ | Did He adopt daughters from what He creates while He preferred you with sons? | Az-Zukhruf : 16

وَاسْأَلْ مَنْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْ رُسُلِنَا أَجَعَلْنَا مِنْ دُونِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ آلِهَةً يُعْبَدُونَ | Ask those of Our apostles We have sent before you: Did We set up any gods to be worshipped besides the All-beneficent? | Az-Zukhruf : 45

This verse shows Mohammad (s) can contact and ask such a question, however, it's rhetorical, and there is no need. But what are the gods they would worship? Per other verses they are Jinn and other verses they are Angels. The synthesis is that it's not truly Angels, but Jinn. But if the Jinn were high and exalted as they say, they would be Angels.

Per Quran, disbelievers such as Pharaoh would suggest that if Prophets were true, then Angels would accompany them:

فَلَوْلَا أُلْقِيَ عَلَيْهِ أَسْوِرَةٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَوْ جَاءَ مَعَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ مُقْتَرِنِينَ | Why no bracelets of gold have been thrown to him, nor any angels accompany him as escorts?’ | Az-Zukhruf : 53

The Angels does not make sense to be humans, this is furthermore explained that Angels are not ruling/representing God on earth:

وَلَوْ نَشَاءُ لَجَعَلْنَا مِنْكُمْ مَلَائِكَةً فِي الْأَرْضِ يَخْلُفُونَ | Had We wished We would have set angels from you ruling/succeeding/representing on the earth. | Az-Zukhruf : 60

This in context also the position of Isa (a), which the polytheists would argue by:

وَقَالُوا أَآلِهَتُنَا خَيْرٌ أَمْ هُوَ ۚ مَا ضَرَبُوهُ لَكَ إِلَّا جَدَلًا ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ خَصِمُونَ | They say, ‘Are our gods better or he?’ They cite him to you only for the sake of contention. Indeed, they are a contentious lot. | Az-Zukhruf : 58

And indeed, it says:

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا عَبْدٌ أَنْعَمْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَجَعَلْنَاهُ مَثَلًا لِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ | He was just a servant whom we favored regarding and made an exemplar for the Children of Israel. | Az-Zukhruf : 59

وَإِنَّهُ لَعِلْمٌ لِلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمْتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَاتَّبِعُونِ ۚ هَٰذَا صِرَاطٌ مُسْتَقِيمٌ | [Say,] ‘Indeed he is a portent of the Hour; so do not doubt it and follow me. This is a straight path. | Az-Zukhruf : 61

This verse furthermore explains the importance of Isa (a) - and while not an Angel, he is a portent of the hour.

I will continue to show the context of Angels and Jinn in the Quran.

With addition to what is presented, there are other verses showing human Messengers are not Angels per Quran:

قُلْ لَوْ كَانَ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَلَائِكَةٌ يَمْشُونَ مُطْمَئِنِّينَ لَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَلَكًا رَسُولًا | Say, ‘Had there been angels in the earth, walking around and residing [in it like humans do], We would have sent down to them an angel from the heaven as apostle.’ | Al-Israa : 95

This goes a long with the opening post which showed God has not made Angels into representatives or rulers on his behalf.

Furthermore Angels exist that for example have the role taking souls upon death:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَفَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ظَالِمِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ قَالُوا فِيمَ كُنْتُمْ ۖ قَالُوا كُنَّا مُسْتَضْعَفِينَ فِي الْأَرْضِ ۚ قَالُوا أَلَمْ تَكُنْ أَرْضُ اللَّهِ وَاسِعَةً فَتُهَاجِرُوا فِيهَا ۚ فَأُولَٰئِكَ مَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيرًا | Indeed, those whom the angels take away while they are wronging themselves, they ask, ‘What state were you in?’ They reply, ‘We were oppressed in the land.’ They say, ‘Was not Allah’s earth vast enough so that you might migrate in it?’ The refuge of such shall be hell, and it is an evil destination. | An-Nisaa : 97

الَّذِينَ تَتَوَفَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ظَالِمِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ ۖ فَأَلْقَوُا السَّلَمَ مَا كُنَّا نَعْمَلُ مِنْ سُوءٍ ۚ بَلَىٰ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ | —Those whom the angels take away while they were wronging themselves. Thereat they submit: ‘We were not doing any evil!’ ‘Yes, [the angels say to them,] indeed Allah knows best what you used to do! | An-Nahl : 28

Furthermore, the type Angels talked about disbelievers are acknowledged to exist and are not imaginary beings nor humans:

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَرْجُونَ لِقَاءَنَا لَوْلَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْنَا الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَوْ نَرَىٰ رَبَّنَا ۗ لَقَدِ اسْتَكْبَرُوا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَعَتَوْا عُتُوًّا كَبِيرًا | Those who do not expect to encounter Us say, ‘Why have angels not been sent down to us, or why do we not see our Lord?’ Certainly, they are full of arrogance within their souls and have become terribly defiant. | Al-Furqaan : 21

يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَا بُشْرَىٰ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُجْرِمِينَ وَيَقُولُونَ حِجْرًا مَحْجُورًا | The day they will see the angels, there will be no good news for the guilty on that day, and they will say, ‘Keep off [from paradise]!’ | Al-Furqaan : 22

Then We shall attend to the works they have done and then turn them into scattered dust. | Al-Furqaan : 23

An obvious verse where Jinn are not subset of humans, is the following verse:

فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَا يُسْأَلُ عَنْ ذَنْبِهِ إِنْسٌ وَلَا جَانٌّ | On that day neither humans will be questioned about their sins nor jinn. | Ar-Rahmaan : 39

On that day neither humans will be questioned about their sins nor jinn. | Ar-Rahmaan : 39

انس and جان have different meanings in the Quran.

Quran defines جان as being created from the fire, whereas انس created from Dust of earth.

By being created from "Dust of Earth" in one sense, it is meant earthly human beings. Those who are attached to earthly things as opposed to Heavenly values and qualities.

By being created with Fire, it is meant human beings whose nature is like fire.

This also have several metaphorical meanings.

I quote from Abdu'l-Baha

Now concerning thy question about the “jinn”—know thou that God, exalted be He, hath created man from four elements: fire, air, water, and earth. Out of fire, heat hath been produced, and from heat, motion hath been engendered. The term “jinn” applieth when the temperament of fire in man dominateth the others, and pertaineth primarily to them that believe in God, are well assured in His signs, and strive in His path, for they were created from the fire of the divine Word which the Tongue of God hath uttered. It is for this reason that He hath said, and His Word is the Truth: “And He created the jinn from a smokeless fire.” [9] Thus hath He described them in His lucid Book through these weighty words: “Powerful over the disbelievers [are they that are with Muḥammad],” [10] for when they wage war against the perverse, thou seest them swift as brilliant lightning and subduing as a piercing spear. Exalted is He Who hath animated them with that fire kindled by the divine Lote-Tree! But when instead thou dost regard their mercy, their kindness, and their obedience to the Cause of God—as well as their sanctification from all else but Him—we refer to them as “angels,” just as we mentioned in the beginning of our explanation.

In another sense, the term “jinn” applieth to those who so excel others in their faith that thou seest them spurred into motion—a motion born of the fire which the Word of God hath ignited. For the sighs of tender affection rise from their hearts, and the flame of the love of God, the Lord of the beginning and the end, burneth brightly within their breasts.

Know thou, O inquirer, that we have expounded unto thee the true meaning of “jinn.” But know, moreover, that, in a metaphorical sense, the term “jinn” also applieth to the disbelievers, due to the pride and arrogance they demonstrate in the Cause of God, as well as the quarrels and disputes they raise with His Prophets. That which hath been sent down in the Súrih of Jinn from the Heaven of the Will of God, the Lord of the worlds, is a sufficient testimony unto the truth of both interpretations. He saith, exalted be He: “Say: It was revealed unto Me that a group of jinn gave ear [to the Qurʼán], and they said, ‘We, verily, have heard a wondrous Qurʼán; it guideth aright, therefore we believe in it and shall never ascribe any partner unto our Lord…some among us are righteous, while others are not; many and divergent are the paths we follow.’” [11]

So why does it call Ahlulbayt (a) that in 4:54?
