What are continums?

This is about the third or fourth thread (Hedonist vs stoic) that has tempted me to describe my own 'graphic' understanding of continuums.
Be it politics, feelings, sexuality - whatever, I always struggled with the Idea of a straight line, with the middle point being the fine state of balance between the two extremes.
Instead, I visualize continuums as being Circular (with a small empty gap along its circumference); of course there is still a centre point where the two extremes are balanced to perfection, but I find my analogy of the 'circlular' continuum demonstrates how 'close to each other' in intensity, are extremes - the emotions of great love, and great hatred.
The political continuum to me is one where the most right winged politics are very much likened to the extreme left wing.
Does this mean anything to anyone, or am I just 'fishing about' in the dark on my own?

Thanks Rich; I wasn't happy about the spelling, but took it from the stoic/hedonist thread. I felt at the time that it was I who was wrong

The political continuum to me is one where the most right winged politics are very much likened to the extreme left wing.

That is something I have heard of before and have certainly been taken advantage of by many politcal parties in order to gain more support. Hitler for example with his crazy far right facist socialist party pretty much took this idea to an extreme.

Maybe this blurring of the 2 extremes came about SOLELY because of unscrupulous people, such as Hitler, who used it so that, depending on whom they were giving a speech to, they could emphasises either the far right or the far left.
