I wasn't talking to you on that statement.

What people don't realize is THEY ARE THE GOVERNMENT, vote for the mayor of your town! You can make a difference!

I agree. We cause government to be what it is. I'm trying (but failing) to cause it to be something else.

1) 8 day weeks and 3 day weekends.
2) Maintain 24 hour days.
3) Allow child labor given the recession.
4) Restrict midget-labor in areas such as midget wrestling and midget exotic dancing
5) Covert world to our measurement systems at any cost. Inches and miles mother f'ers!!
6) Expand second amendment to cover nuclear weapons and other explosives
7) Change all political voting systems to telephone based like American Idol does it.
8) Give every man, women, and child a cell phone.
9) Make sure the free national cell phones are not on the AT&T network.
10) Abolish and absolve AT&T.

1. Lobbying politicians with any form of capital is a federal crime.
2. Legalize gay marriage for all US adult citizens.
(3. Use single-transferable vote to elect the House of Representatives, as explained here.)
4. Abolish the DEA and decriminalize all controlled substances. States may set their own drug laws.
5. Change the 2nd-highest income tax bracket from 33% to 50%, and the highest bracket from 35% to 60%.
(6. Require that Congress pass laws with a 55% majority; no filibuster; and it takes only 60% of each house to override a veto.)
7. Close tax loopholes for the rich, particularly offshore accounts.
8. Create a branch of government to enforce and prosecute sexual violence laws.
9. Set a nationwide age of consent at 15 (much of Western Europe has this or lower), and an age exception for partners that are no more than 4 years apart in age. Non-consensual sex must be harshly prosecuted regardless of age.
10. Remove free speech protection from blatant hate speech and hate groups.

Ah, crap. Forgot two VERY important ones. Strike #3 and #6, and replace them with the following:
-Cease treating corporations as persons. Make all management personally liable for their actions.
-Create a nationwide high-speed, MAGLEV rail system. (thanks, Smoke!)

Do you suppose that this might cause some mischief when the party in power has the ability to imprison its foes?
You trust Bush, Obama, Palin, McCain, Pelosi, Frank, Nixon & their ilk far more than I do.

I think there's a debate to be had about where one draws the line over "threats." The law is slightly questionable when a private citizen can be fined or (if intent is shown) jailed for making a threat, but organizations can technically exist whose stated intent is to exterminate or enslave a whole population of people.

Eh? I'm just saying is that there is always going to be someone who is going to jump at a chance to seize power. With no government or no rules, there are people who, due to the lack of deterrence, will take advantage of that opportunity. For example the warlords in Somalia.

Sure, but doesn't mean that's a state of no government will always been or has to be under those conditions.

the number ONE thing government should do is repeal the Federal Reserve Act, and re-instate the gold standard.

If banks had to actually have money, real solid money in their vaults in order to extend credit to anyone,.....if governments had to actually sell treasury bonds for real cash, not fiat currency,....if there were no central banks owned and operated by secret individuals who cannot be audited by the public and are not accountable to the people, who bail them out every time there is a crisis...then the deficit would disappear, and governments would be forced to start being responsible with their money, and people would actually start to SAVE money and make a good living!

Hallelujah! :trampo:

The way I see it, modern governments are basically souped up tribal organizations. So, if you want to know what modern governments should do -- just look at what tribes did for their people. That at least would be a start.

Well, my list applies to the US as that's where I live.

1. Reduce the federal government and have states take more control over welfare programs if they choose to. I feel that a democratic republic consisting of 300 million people is spread to its limits, so it needs to be broken up into more manageable chunks. Let the federal income tax be greatly reduced and state income taxes increased if that's what states want to do.
2. Balance the budget. Seriously.
3. Reduce military spending but maintain a strong military. I mean, really, we spend as much money on our military as the rest of the world combined, so that's basically half of the global military spending. Maybe a fourth would do, so cut ours in half (which will still be huge). Adopt a more isolationist stance on world affairs, but not completely. Only intervene when a) There is a drastic threat to national security, or b) a NATO ally is attacked, or c) Any nation specifically calls for help and we feel that the cause is worthy. In other words don't be the world police but be there to do good when good can be done.
4. Have the federal government focus more attention on the environment. There's no excuse, and citizens and companies can't be trusted to think 100 years ahead.
5. The government should have less of a say as to who can get married.
6. Have the federal government focus a little bit more on space exploration.
7. Simplify the tax code a lot.
8. Fix the lobbying and campaign contribution system. I don't have anything specific in mind, but a lot of thought needs to be put towards this.
9. Uphold the constitution better.
10. Make college affordable for professional programs.
