I once met a professional hypnotist, a therapeutic hypnotist rather than a stage hypnotist

He told me that all hypnosis is self hypnosis

And that the role of a hypnotist is to help people hypnotise themselves

Self hypnosis is a way to get more in touch with the unconscious mind. This was part of the platform I used for running unconscious mind experiments on myself. Hypnosis is often used even in law enforcement to access subliminal data that is below the consciousness of witnesses but which the unconscious mind recorded, and can be made conscious. The main frame parts of the brain is more capable, with the ego often unaware of just how propped up it is, by the mainframe parts of the brain.

When I was in high school I went through a two weekend course called Silva Mind Control. I had no money but the instructor allowed me to complete the course for free, after the free introduction. The goal of this course was to teach you how to access more of the unconscious mind. In a sense it was like a group self hypnosis to create a brain wave alpha state. Once there they show you tools for accessing more of unconscious mind. One thing I got good at was pain control; coaxing the brain to get rid of the pain.

We also did what was called cases, where former members, from the around the world, would write their medical conditions on index cards and we had to visualize the card, without seeing it, to guess what was on the cards. There would be another person; spotter, holding the cards and then they would show you after your guess. Some of the children were amazing with some getting 9 out of 10. I got maybe 6/10.

The most memorable case, was I saw a woman lying on a table, but I could not tell what she had, since she was covered with a sheet. I told the spotter and he told me pull back the sheet. I did and I saw she was pregnant. The spotter was as surprise as me since it was so vivid in terms of the detail I could see and relate. The rest of the cases were more like fuzzy silhouettes with a darker area where their condition was; near their heart, their leg, etc. Near the heart could be heart attack or high blood pressure; fuzzy but close.

One technique they showed was visualizing at the microscopic level. I still used to see at the chemical level.

They even taught us a technique to be able to find parking spots, in the front of a venue, as close as you could get. You start the process as you leave home and sure enough, you would amaze yourself. But it took a certain focus that faded with time.

The Course was called Silva Mind Control and was a type of self meditation with lots of useful applications. There is a paperback book you can buy on Amazon.

From Wikipedia;

The technique aims to reach and sustain a state of mental functioning, called alpha state, where brainwavefrequency is seven to fourteen Hz.[8]:p19-20 Daydreaming and the transition to sleeping are alpha states.[8]:p19-20

Silva claimed to have developed a program that trained people to enter certain brain states of enhanced awareness. He also claimed to have developed several systematic mental processes to use while in these states allowing a person to mentally project with a specific intent. According to Silva, once the mind is projected, a person can allegedly view distant objects or locations and connect with higher intelligence for guidance. The information received by the projected mind is then said to be perceived as thoughts, images, feelings, smells, taste, and sound by the mind. The information obtained in this manner can be acted upon to solve problems.[8]

Yup. My last therapist uses hypnosis. And basically this. It's like a guided meditation.

The Silva Mind Control course showed you how to adjust your brain waves so you could remain in the alpha state, as well as recognize the beta and gamma states in yourself and others. Alpha waves occur at 7-14 HZ. Beta waves occur at a faster frequency 12-30 HZ. Gamma waves are the fastest at 30-80 HZ.

gamma is linked with states or tasks that require more focused concentration; fight or flight, beta is linked with higher anxiety and more active states, with attention often directed externally. alpha is linked with being very relaxed, and passive attention (such as listening quietly but not engaging).

The exercises would get you relaxed with more passive attention, so learning and internal daydreaming effects; unconscious mind, were more active. When you would meet another member, the next day, if they seemed stressed, you would say "don't go beta". They would laugh and adjust. It was all very positive with the main slogan being; "Everyday, in every way, I am getter better and better".

I remember one time, it was break time; 12 hour days, and I decided to walk beyond the hotel conference room where the work shop was held. I found a window to look outside. There I saw a sun beam; column of light from a cloud to the ground. I called the group to see. There was a group feeling of awe that seemed to be more possible with all being in alpha. Spiritual meditation uses the same brain wave frequencies.

My guess is Atheists tend; trained, to be more in the beta state, which could explain why they cannot sense anything internally, that would help to fuel any faith. All is outside to them; based on sensory materialism, which is how the brain works at that frequency. Don't go beta all the time. A little alpha can also be refreshing.

If you watched the assassination attempt of Trump, the crowd near the stage did not panic but stayed and looked concerned. This appeared to have been in an alpha state; spiritual state, seeking some meaning for what they witnessed.

I'm not sure what you mean by "people in Psychology." Do you mean people in this forum.

Self hypnosis can be helpful. However it works much better for some than others. There are those who simply aren't suggestable.

It works with some people.
It doesn't work with people who have full control of their mind.
It didn't work with me.
But it did work with some of my friends.

I tried to do self hypnosis when I was younger. It was lovely being that relaxed, and sometimes I even fell asleep. But I just wasn't suggestible.
