What do you know about the Picts?

Their religion and such. I have recently began doing more research on them, having some Scottish heritage and wanting to know more about them. Anything you know will be welcomed :)

I live close to the pictish capital so I can say a little. Not much is known at all. They had no written language. They made a lot carved petroglyphs in stone that were never deciphered.
They were an agricultural society. All of the nobility were trained hunters and warriors from birth. They made extremely fierce warriors and were a principal reason why the Romans never really got a foothold into Scotland. The picts went a step further and conducted regular raids on coastal towns and along rivers into roman territory.

The pre-christian religion has virtually nothing known about it since they had no written language and were hostile with those who did. It's thought to have been similar to the celtic religions. They became christian very early on from about the 7th to 8th century thanks to the irishman St. Columba. They worshipped the saints like polytheistic gods and St. Andrew in particular was a favorite, and remains the patron saint of Scotland today.

The pictish language and culture disappeared, but the pictish people are still here. The brutes can still be seen, covered in old blue tattoos having a cigarette just outside the door of the pub.

Since I am part Scottish, I always love to say that means that I have some Pictish in me ;)

I'm not quite as burly as those men but I'm getting there! haha. I wear kilts like them though (Americans actually don't think it's that weird!)

But it is truly a shame that when Christianity was introduced it had to destroy the polytheistic religion. Because they worshipped the saints like Gods, I just think it was their way of keeping their polytheism under the veil of Christianity. I am just very intrigued by the Picts because they are so mysterious.

Insert Witty Title Here
Like what has been said - the Picts were extremely mysterious and almost nothing is known for sure about them. As my understanding goes [insert 'I am not an expert' caveat here] they were absorbed rather quickly by Irish settlers that brought their language and culture with them, which is what developed into modern Gaidhlig (Scottish Gaelic), and by extension what we normally think of as Scottish culture. The Picts themselves left no real influence language or culture-wise, save perhaps genetics, I suppose.

BTW I am partly Scottish on my father's side, so hello distant cousin removed 1000 times :p haha

The Picts were an ancient race of people that inhabited the northern territories of what is known today as Scotland. Recorded as uncultured savages in defamatory Roman accounts, new findings suggest the Picts had developed written language as far back as 1,700 years ago.
