If heaven and hell are states and not places. Why do people talk about going to heaven or hell, instead of say facing either heaven or hell?

Notice when asked where Heaven is, people point up. And Hell is down. Well, we know it really isn't there, but since we don't exactly know where it is, we substitute a more concrete answer.
