What Elements Do All Religions Have In Common?

What elements do all religions have in common? I don't mean "They all seek a spiritual truth"... but what theological elements? For example, Christianity and many pagan religions share the concept of a sacrificial god...

God is love, God is light, God is everywhere, we have a soul we are eternal, everything in the universe is interconnected, God is within. They have rules to live by. Most religions have a name for God. Most agree there is one God, even though some have incarnations of God. Many religions believe in reincarnation.

Other than the Golden Rule business and Painted Wolf's becoming a better person, the above statements do not apply to Buddhism.

Yes I do. There are many different stories..... do you refer to any specific one, or to the whole conglomeration?

I disagree with some of the common things we've listed here between all religions.

Not all religions believe in one God. Not all of them have love in common. The Aztecs (if I remember middle school correctly) worshipped a very nasty God(s) who demanded human sacrifice all the time.

Not all religions believe their God, gods, or godesses are everywhere, or within. The Greek gods weren't everywhere at once, nor were the Egyptian gods.

I think all religions have this in common: they try to explain things we observe in the world and the feelings we have inside us by means which are unreliable.

runt: i was just reading today in a book: apocalypse by robert smith, professor at pacific lutheran theological seminary. in it he stated that the devil tries to imitate God thru sacrifice, etc. let me quote him from pg. 68: "the devil always imitates God in the evil effort to look like God and so lead humanity astray." he goes on to say that he falls short; which is why he is the imperfect number 666, unlike the perfect number 777 or Divine number 888, which is higher than perfect.

engyo: i am referring to buddha as a prince who never left the luxury of a palace until he was a young man. after seeing how the average man lived(poverty), he gave up his royal title and proceeded to clothe the naked, feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.

mr. sprinkles: every religion has conditional love(like bartering), but not unconditional(giving without expecting anything in return).

some feelings are unreliable because they don't always produce the expected results like passion.

Ahh, but that is only the beginning of the story. He found that all of his generosity did nothing to eradicate the underlying causes of suffering. So he proceeded with his quest to understand and eliminate suffering, which ultimately led to his enlightenment, and the establishment of Buddhism.
