What Explains U.S. Mass Shootings? International Comparisons Suggest an Answer

International studies pretty conclusively demonstrate guns are the decisive difference between the US and other nations in which mass shootings are significantly less frequent. Reduce the number of guns, reduce the number of mass shootings. It's that's obvious.

Yeah, I read that article to unfortunately Americans would rather die than give up there guns. The final statement says it all.

Dan Hodges, a British journalist, wrote in a post on Twitter two years ago, referring to the 2012 attack that killed 20 young students at an elementary school in Connecticut. “Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over.”

Sadly, I know people, in real life, who believe that shooting was a hoax.

What I don't get is when people try to say Americans have always had guns like, have always been obsessed with guns, and always toted them around, when there is just too much concrete evidence that shows this is a more modern trend, and even the so-called "Wild West" had far more gun control and far fewer guns than we have today. I also don't get how guns are supposed to be a deterrent, when clearly that just isn't working. The "ultra pro-gun" crowd likes to point the finger at "gun-free zones," but we're seeing that mass shootings do not exclusively happen in such places. More guns to solve our problem of gun violence is like using a flame thrower to put out a house fire. We need reasonable and sensible regulations from top-to-bottom, but good-****ing-luck on even getting it mandated that people be trained in gun safety before we allow them to buy a gun.

Americans can put a man on the moon, and yet you doubt we're smart enough to reduce the number of guns in our society if we had the political will to do so. How funny.

Now now, Sunstone. Getting rid of the brown people is what is important at this point in time. Let's not lose focus because of some mass killings, we still have young non-natives doing well in our schools and contributing to our society, It is obviously more important to get them out of the country than to spend time on gun control issues.

So you advocate governmental confiscation of firearms?

What laws would you like to see enacted?

Australia did it.
But now dingoes steal all their babies.

I see some risk factors....
- Many guns.
- Poor storage security.
- Sloppy government record keeping.
- The wrong people can legally get them.
- Inadequate mental health services.
- Unproductive debate & lack of cooperation between pro & anti gun control camps.
- Restrictions upon self defense.
- Bush....everything is his fault.

First of all, someone who wants to do damage can always use whatever weapons are available. If it isn't guns, it will be knives or cars.

But, for knives and cars, the likelihood of killing 26 people at once is very low. The recent van in New York killed 8.

So, yes, we should make it much more difficult to get the types of guns that can kill many people quickly. We should have background checks for *all* gun sales and make sure the database is up to date (a failure in the most recent shooting).

Criminals will still kill people. But maybe not as many. And we won't have the incredible number of gun deaths that the US is the ONLY developed country to have.

Your own words convict you "..political will to do so...". How else could you possibly reduce guns without government intervention?

All I'm saying is Americans are smart enough to find a means whereby to reduce the number of guns in private hands in this country. I refuse to speculate on what that means might be here.

Well...duh...! So how do you propose reducing the number of guns?
Up the price/taxes significantly. Offer gun buyback programs. Anonymous tip lines to inform on people who you think might illegally own a gun. There are many options.

It is a fact that guns are far more expensive on the black market, so if you make it harder to obtain guns legally, the price on the black market will go up further.
