If I recall correctly Favipirovir is used by Japan and South Korea for Covid 19 and they have hardly any deaths compared to other developed countries (certainly less than USA, UK, Italy, Spain,France)
Favipiravir is an oral antiviral approved for the treatment of influenza in Japan. It selectively inhibits RNA polymerase, which is necessary for viral replication. Japan has commenced with a phase 3 clinical trial. In the United States, a phase 2 trial will enroll approximately 50 patients with COVID-19, in collaboration with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. In India, a phase 3 trial combining 2 antiviral agents, favipiravir and umifenovir, started in May 2020 What is the status of the antiviral drug favipiravir in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)?
On the surface, it appears to be yet another "not invented here" syndrome with the US only doing a phase 2 trial. We need to start accepting results from countries like Japan at least on a preliminary basis.

That exactly! Now is just not the time for foolish nationism and national pride. If we dont get the cure first? Quit defunding education. Work to make it possible for more minorities and impoverished citizens to go. Suppliment the income of high demand fields with a small pool of workers. Make things financially easier, not harder, for those in grad school. Amd teach real science over superstiton and promote critical thinking. Tell kids math is fun and the key to adventure.
Yes. Children just should not be asking what they'll ever use math for. They should readily know the answer is just about everything can be enhanced with a bit of mathematical application. They could always integrate math and science, and load the kids up with lots of fun and practical experiments to get them exciting and using math for fun things. Algebra, geometry, and trigonometry just won't seem as intimidating and daunting if learning and using it means getting to build your own model rocket that didn't come from a kit. Home ec as well has plenty of opportunities for math. Even in arts it can be beneficial to have at least a decent understanding of math, and help make impressive things (like geometric art or, I forget the term, poems that have lines made out to look like a picture).
And then we may not have issues interpreting statistics, and knowing that even a lower risk doesn't mean young adults and kids are invulnerable to Covid. We'd know why the 2016 polls were largely accurate and within their margin of error.
But, if the keys to everyone's dreams and passions are handed to them (and I do believe math is one of those keys) then the elite lose out when people aren't giving their lives to further enrich the elite.
