What if there were NO Religion

No Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism etc etc.

What would the world and society look like? What would we turn our attention to?

Science maybe? Would we focus more on the important things like work and family?

Thoughts please.

well, if there were no religion, there would have been no 9/11, no crusades, no thirty years war. I think over all the world would be a much better place, of course there would still be atrocities in the world, and I'm sure we would have found some other dogma, to dictate how we should behave. But get rid of religion and you get rid of one less evil in the world.

People always want to how and why they exist. And being that there's different people, there are different answers to the questions.
Asking what if there was no religion is kind of like asking what if there were no trees. We can only speculate at best.

Science would probably advance much faster, which could either be seen as a good thing or a bad thing. It's a good thing because a single person can see thousands of discoveries in his lifetime, but it could be a bad thing for the same reason. Our minds can only hold so much, after all.

Wars on the other hand, would be no different. Humans are, by nature, aggressive animals, and find all kinds of stupid excuses for combat. Look at feudal Japan, where religion is not the top priority, but combat is. And combat wasn't fought for religious reasons; it was for territory. (correct me if my history is incorrect, please!) If anything, there would be more war if there were no religions, because there'd be nothing to hold us back from destroying everything.

As for work and family, we already pay a good amount of attention to those things, and I don't think it would be much different.

So, what would the world be like? Probably trying to recover from nuclear holocaust.

Wouldn't it be taking away a LOT of reasons to war and feud though? I mean, do you really think there would be more war? Take away holy wars and you save a lot of lives. There are societies that having been fighting for thousands of years for religious reasons. I think there would be more peace.

The living would continue to live, the dead will continue to be dead.

Life as usual.

What if there was never an Elvis Presley? There would be a Britney. What if there never was a Hitler? There would be a Sadam.

Those is power would create other institutions of control to indoctrinate the populace with, in order to manipulate them for their own gain. The method of control could be just about anything, as the average person is basically begging to be told what to believe by an authority.

Religion is a natural result of the darker side of human nature, not the cause.

I agree partly. Mostly the people who lust after power are the ones who are most unhappy that others have it and they dont.

Human power, in all its forms corrupt. Its both the one who has it, and the one who lusts after it who sit on the 'dark side'

I will say that a lot of the wars that did happen with religion as a justification would probably not have happened. Other wars would have been fought instead.

The only real reason for the Crusades was not primarily religion, although I will theorize that if Europe hadn't been Christianized they would not have happened. The real reason was just for bragging rights; saying "We have Jerusalem!" More pathetic than religion, if you ask me.

But there are plenty of cultures who have been going to war for thousands of years that have nothing to do with religion. Take Asia for instance. They see the reasons for what they really are: territorial control.

Nobody would be cool?
Yup, everybody would not be cool, they would be super cool.

But seriously, if we are asking hypotheticals about "what if everyone in the world was an atheist" why not replace "atheists" with some other religion? After all, the point of the question is everyone would then be unified under one set of religious beliefs, or lack there of.

Depends how it arose. If it was a matter of everyone suddenly deciding to give up their religions, I think things might be okay.

If it was a matter of crushing every religion until their adherents are either dead or renounce their faith... I can't think of much that would be worse.

The living would continue to live, the dead will continue to be dead.

Life as usual.
If there would be no appreciable change, then doesn't this imply that religion isn't a force for good in the world? ;)

What if we woke up one day and everyone was Mormon?
The world would be a much more miserable place.

Seriously - you don't want to be around me before I have my coffee. If I were like that all the time, the world would be a much more miserable place for me and I would make sure that everyone around me shared in that caffeine-deprived misery.

Humans would become even more vicious towards one another. The reason being that there would still exist a super 'unknown' entity negatively influencing humanity. They would dare not admit it though because in so doing this would confirm Christianity. They may test and test and test as to why only the human spiecies seems to be plagued with this malady, but these researchers will only say that more testing needs to be done.

We would probably just find another way to divide ourselves and then fight over it.
