Cotton is soft and doesn't damage skin, however it gets soaked if you're working and keeps your skin moist. Nylon and spandex and polyester material is good for keeping dry, however its like a microscopic rasp sometimes and can be uncomfortable after hours of motion. This is also true for shirts that rub your chest. They can give you raw skin. There are some other materials out there I have not tried: bamboo (a type of rayon), rayon, hemp, tencel and wool. There are sellers who make underwear out of all the above.

Briefs.
Boxers offer no support, so what's the point? Why wear anything under your trousers?

They make good box kites.
They help wick moisture away from your body, if done right.
They are smooth and protect from the seams inside slacks.

My husband sags his pants, so his underwear are always hanging out. He better stick with boxers. I don't think it would have the desired look with briefs.
