What is blessing?

The followers of all the other religions, greet others, saying “God bless you”, but Buddhists very seldom greet others, saying Buddha bless you.

In Buddhist literature there is one sutta with the name of Mangala.
Some teachers translate the word Mangala as Blassing.
If you are interested in Buddhist ethics, Mangala Sutta is one of the important Buddha’s teachings for you to study.

In Mangala Sutta there are 38 reasons to be blessed.
Most of them depend on oneself, who wants blessing.
No one can bless us without any effort on our part.

Friend YW,

Buddha is not a god. Because of this, buddhists would not say "buddha bless you" like others say "god bless you". Does that make sense?

Friend MV,

Buddha means the AWAKENED one and through religion one is trying to be awakened.
Awakening means CONSCIOUSNESS.
Buddha bless you just means allow consciousness to shower or let consciousness pervade you etc.

I understand your understanding. :D I'm just not entirely sure that it's at all comparable to saying... "god bless you".

As Buddha taught in Mangala Sutta, I understand that we cannot get any blessing without own effort. We cannot get blessing by praying nor by worshiping.

To be blessed we must have...
1) good actions
2) good speechs and
3) good thoughts.

that is why i need to reply as shown in previous post.

If you are interested in Buddhist ethics, Mangala Sutta is one of the important Buddha’s teachings for you to study. If you are not a Buddhist, I don’t hope that you will accept the first 4-paragraphs. But these paragraphs are not very important, because they don’t concern with any of human ethics. Therefore please pay more attention to the other paragraphs.
