Wikipedia has several articles.

What is it? Where did it come from ? What does it stand for ?

A style of medieval church architecture in Europe that followed the Romanesque or Norman style, starting from the c.12th. Most of the great cathedrals of N. Europe are Gothic.

So why do goths like dressing in black and Edgar Allan Poe ?

That's from the so-called Gothic novels of the late c.18th/c.19th. These were a sideline of the Romantic movement, based on suspense and horror stories set around creepy old monasteries, castles, etc, haunted or otherwise wreathed in strange influences - such buildings being normally Gothic in architecture. The people you you see dressed as "Goths" are trying to look like creepy characters out of these novels.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is an example, though admittedly you don't often see Goths with bolts through their necks.:D

Lots of them take inspiration from the fashion of the members of the goth rock/dark wave bands they enjoy. I used to dress a bit like two of the members of The Sisters of Mercy from its goth rock era.

Why didn't you bother to, you know, actually read those articles? Wouldn't have needed the thread then.

Because there's another article called "Gothic Revival" and there isn't that much difference time wise between Gothic and Revival : less than 200 years in some places

How does goth rock differ from goth metal ?

If you hang out in graveyards a lot, your mind tends to drift towards Necromancy after a while.

Love "This Corrosion"!

Me too, but I prefer their earlier stuff, tracks like Alice, Temple of Love, and Some Kind of Stranger.

Those are all good songs by the Sisters. I think my absolute favorites are 'Black Planet' and 'Marian,' though these days, I hardly listen to any goth music or really anything other than traditional Chinese music and Hindu devotional songs. Another group that I liked was Nosferatu. I think my favorite by them was 'Dark Angel.' The new vocalist has a great voice, to me at least.
