What is that thing in front of Mormon Churches?

Okay.. silly question I know. But, I have to know what that big pointed poll outside of all the churches is for.

I've asked many Mormons and nobody seems to know what I'm talking about.

I've wondered the same thing.

I've heard that it's supposed to function the same as a steeple on other churches, a piece of archetecture made to make you look up towards the heavens. The poles are only found in front of churches that don't have steeples.

When they put the steeple on the top of our church they took the pole down. I think it's just an artistic way they used to do things. It seems to have been a trend on churches built in the 1970s.

I was always told they were lightning rods.

I sure don't like them. I prefer the older buildings that don't have them.

It's a conversation piece, just to get people to ask, how do you think they get their members? :D......just joking but it might work ;)

You may be referring to the American flag pole. The flag is only attached and raised on Sunday.

Could somebody please post a picture of one of these "big pointed poles"? I have lived in Mormon country all my life and I don't recall having ever seen such an object.

Hmm. I tried to post some links to good photos, but it looks like I'm still too new on the forum to post URLs to some pictures of what I'm thinking about. I guess I'll have to wait a while to explain my thoughts photographically! :D

I can tell you that the sort of thing I'm thinking about is very common in California.

Here is what I think the post is referencing. There are similar meeting house designs as well.

Sorry for the spaces in there, haven't posted enough to post images or links.

I have some meetinghouse photos in the religious photos gallery. No poles though. They removed the pole steeples and replaced them with roof top steeples.

Now that I think of it, a church I used to attend had a "detached steeple" (for lack of a better word). I never paid much attention to it, probably just because I subconsciously realized all along that it was merely a steeple.

I've never been to a church that has a flagpole.
My ward has a flagpole. I've never noticed whether the flag is flying or not, but we do have a special sunrise ceremony and pancake breakfast in the parking lot on the Fourth of July, and they raise the flag then for sure.

I typically avoid the pancake breakfastes. I already spend too much time with those people.
