What is the afterlife in Islam like?

I am trying to learn of Islam so I do have a lot of questions. AsWhat I have been told and some of what the Quran I have read. I would appreciate feedback. I know this is a long list so if you do not wish to answer all I will understand.

It seems there will be 3 questions asked and the good actions of the believer will be weighed against their misdeeds. Is this correct? Where are these good actions described in the Quran

Is there a more detailed description and where can it be found. Is it only in the Quran or can it be take from other places such as teachings of those who have lived since the Quran was created. Which book of the Quran is it described in or are there many?

I have heard that Allah will forgive non-believers up until the moment of judgment then he will cast believers in hell for a brief period of time. How does the Islamic belief of hell differ from Christianity? It is defined as a eternal hell or may one be forgiven after a period of time?

What creates the majority of conflict between two different sects of the religion? Is it belief in the afterlife. Ways of culture. Belief in different prophets or can be said more do to political and nationalism?

Thank you

Concering the 3 questions it's a hadith, when we will be in the grave Angels will ask us questions about our faith.

Is there a more detailed description and where can it be found. Is it only in the Quran or can it be take from other places such as teachings of those who have lived since the Quran was created. Which book of the Quran is it described in or are there many?

I suggest you this book "The gardens of the righteous" : Riyad as-Salihin - Sunnah.com - Sayings and Teachings of Prophet Muhammad (??? ???? ???? ? ???)

I have heard that Allah will forgive non-believers up until the moment of judgment then he will cast believers in hell for a brief period of time. How does the Islamic belief of hell differ from Christianity? It is defined as a eternal hell or may one be forgiven after a period of time?

Allah Said about non believers :

4.17 The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness, and Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.

4.18
But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "Indeed, I have repented now," or of those who die while they are disbelievers.

Concerning the believers and non believers in Hell, Quran says :

19.68 So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees.

19.69 Then We will surely extract from every sect those of them who were worst against the Most Merciful in insolence.

19.71
And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.

19.72 Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.

Concerning the verse 19.71, it's about a bridge above the Hell.
People will cross the bridge in accordance with their deeds. The more you have good deeds the faster you pass by this bridge.

How does the Islamic belief of hell differ from Christianity? It is defined as a eternal hell or may one be forgiven after a period of time?

I can't make a comparison with Christianity because i don't know enought about their description of Hell.

I the Quran Allah Said :

6.128 And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day when He will gather them together [and say], "O company of jinn, you have [misled] many of mankind." And their allies among mankind will say, "Our Lord, some of us made use of others, and we have [now] reached our term, which you appointed for us."

He will say, "The Fire is your residence, wherein you will abide eternally, except for what Allah wills. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing."

Only God Knows.
I personnally find it difficult to answer this question.
I hope i answered some of you questions.

Hey Yoda,
I've never heard of the 3 questions. It's not in the Quran. It must be from Hadith. There is also no concept of purgatory or anything similar to it in the Quran. Although there is such a thing in Hadith I believe. Quran only says that after we die, we will be brought back to life with all people who ever lived on the day of judgment.

God says in the Quran that hell is eternal unless he decides to pardon sinners. There is no concept of hell being temporary. There is however a verse about those who say hell is temporary and how they are speaking without knowledge in saying that. I'll try to find the verse if you want it. I remember reading it but don't remember the verse number off the top of my head.

As for why there are different sects and differences in belief, it comes down to Hadith books. All Muslims believe the Quran is the word of God and they all believe in the same prophets. But Sunnis have their own Hadith books and Shia have their Hadith books. They both reject the authenticity of the others Hadith books. Hadith basically means narrations and these books contain alleged sayings and stories of Prophet Muhammad. There are many other sects who follow different sources outside of the Quran. Personally, I don't follow any Hadith books, nor do I consider them part of Islam. Only the Quran. But most Muslims do consider these books essential to their faith.

There are many verses in the Quran which describe heaven and hell. We are given a few details but the rest is still a mystery. This much is clear though, heaven is beautiful beyond our comprehension and hell is a horrible place.

[2:25] Give good news to those who acknowledge and do the reforms, that they will have gardens with rivers flowing beneath. Every time they receive of its fruit, they say, "This is what we have been provisioned before," and they are given its likeness/allegories. Moreover, there they will have pure spouses, and there they will abide.

[3:15] Say, "Shall I inform you of what is greater than all this? For those who are aware, at their Lord there will be gardens with rivers flowing beneath, abiding there eternally, and purified mates, and an acceptance from God. God is Seer of the servants."

[13:23] The gardens of Eden, they will enter it with those who are good doers from their fathers and their mates and their progeny. The angels will enter upon them from every gate:

[52:21] Those who acknowledged, and their progeny also followed them in acknowledgement; We will have their progeny join them. We never fail to reward them for any work. Every person is paid for what he did.

[67:3] He created seven heavens in harmony. You do not see any disorder in the creation by the Gracious. Keep looking; do you see any flaw?

As Heaven and Hell are spiritual, occurring after this physical life is ended then the descriptions must be allegorical.
So apart from the symbolic description included in the Quran no one really knows.

Hi Aamer .
thank you for your credible and very relevant response to this very critical question . shia and suna as you said have differences according to hadith . you don't believe in hadith, this is amazing and i personally was thinking about this before . what is in hadith sometimes completes koran views of some verses which are not really clear . sso you are right , hadith is something critical and every Muslim has to see this topic and have some different views.

I have never heard of this personally, but with Allah is the judgement.
Te differences isn't much. Both christians and muslims believe hell will be punishment for the wrongdoers.

Well politics and nationalism does play a part. Many times you here the accusations of Shia being Iranian agents. But it also has to do with religion.
