The scripture clearly says the lake of fire is the second death, or the death of the soul.

The eternal torment you think of is not biblical. It is from works of fiction like Divine Comedy - Wikipedia. Which was loosely based on the Bible but not an accurate representation of what the Bible says.

My experience is that the Lake of Fire is no place of torment, though personality can be removed there. The Lower Hell is the Christian place of torment in as much as everything is done to change you.

What is the Lake of Fire?

First off, the Bible states that “death and hell were cast into the Lake of Fire” at Revelation 20:14.

Hell cant be the L of F, If hell is thrown into it.

What does the L of F mean?

That verse also says death was hurled into the L of F. Death isn’t something tangible, that can be burned. If you turn to the next chapter, Revelation 21:4, it says “death will be no more”.

Sometimes fire, in the Bible, is symbolic and represents ‘complete destruction’: just like literal fire.... if you burn something up, you ain’t gettin it back, ever!

So the Bible’s telling us that Adamic death (ie., death through sin, what we got from Adam — Romans 5:12) will be gone, forever!

And hell will be gone...no more Grave (which is hell...That’s what Jesus was in, for parts of three days! — Acts of the Apostles 2:25-27.)

Exodus 3:2-4

3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

4 And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

God is depicted as a fire here with Moses in the Old Testament.

The idea was used by other religions before the Hebrew picked it up, and of course the Christians.

It seems to be a metaphorical refining.

The base word in Tanakh actually refers to a refiner's furnace that burns off the dross (impurities,) leaving the pure.

Mal 3:2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
