What is the Meaning of Christmas Today?

Has the meaning of Christmas changed? Specifically, has it changed from a religious holiday to a purely secular and commercialized potlatch? What do you think?

More and more, Christmas is becoming a secular holiday. It will always retain a religious celebration for Christianity but largely contained in the churches and famillies of Christians.

I think of it as mostly Christian and Heathen, with several other pagan and secular influences. The great thing is, that it means something different to everyone and we can all celebrate together. It is a little annoying how the pc police want it totally secularized, but people really don't take those wackjobs seriously.

Christmas is the time for kids to sap all the money out of their parents for presents, and a time to get together for happy (or not) family gatherings, and an exchange of presents, and spiked eggnog.

Is that so? Do the "PC Police" really want the holiday "totally secularized"? I thought they just wanted it kept out of government and the schools.

And malls, stores, television, radio, etc. etc. I mean, I don't really care. It's not going to affect me lol. People can fuss and complain about labels and celebrations all they want as long as I'm allowed to celebrate the way I want in my own home. If these nuts want to make a fuss, let em'. I suspect there are a great number of wackos with nothing better to do during the holidays. I, however, have more important things on my mind. :)

I just heard earlier that there was some fuss over someone who wanted to call a Christmas Tree, a "Holiday Tree" lol. PC police love to rename stuff don't they? lol. So silly.

yeah Dark, they call "manholes", "peopleholes" now :biglaugh:

They always have to be renaming stuff... trying to hide reality with idiotic phrases. These people just can't deal with life, so they have to try to make everything fit in with their own perverse worldview. I don't pay them any mind. Believe me, they'll screw themselves over on their own.

lol Holiday Tree :biglaugh: hahahaha idiots.

"The first reported observance of Christmas as the birth of Jesus Christ was more than 300 years after the event. In the 4th Century, Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, and, scholars believe, Christians set Jesus’ birthdate at Dec. 25 to coincide with existent celebrating by non-Christians

You can recognize Christmas for what it is, a pagan celebration that falsely parades as the birthday of Jesus,

The
Church Times acknowledged: "It takes a brave man, woman or family to opt out of a festival that is thrust upon us so aggressively by our peers."

Many who have made the decision to "opt out" agree. But they also know that a deep love of truth has given them both the incentive and the strength to take and maintain that stand

In the UK it has become a giant spend and winter break.
Many companies shut down from the thursday or friday before christmas till the new year.
Retailers make 50% of their profits over Christmas.

When I started work only christmas day itself was a holiday.
There are still a few who celebrate the Birth of Christ.
But not in hospitals, round here they do not allow christmas decorations in the wards
in case it up sets moslems.I was in hospital three years ago and they came and collected up all the decorations.

Christmas, for me, now evokes the screetch of Bart Simpson's "Eat my Shorts"; When our kids were 15 and 9, Marie and I bought them an Amiga 1200 for christmas, and yes, the game software included a game based on the Simpsons.

Christmas will never be the same; I can still hear that "Eat my Shorts" every year, even though the kids are no longer kids.

I agree, but it almost feels an effort to remember the religious significance, under the pressure of gifts and preparation.......

Christmas is what you want it to be. If I wish to celebrate it in July, that's my choice. If I choose to celebrate it by getting kooter brown drunk, my choice. (I don't drink, but if I did...) I could care less where it originated from. To me, it's a day to Thank Christ by giving to my kids. That look on their faces as they open their presents... priceless.

I celebrate Christmas as a purely secular holiday. For the past several years, it has been wearing thin. The way everyone treats each other, including family, is so fake its disheartening. I look forward to the end of Christmas anymore, and opt out of as much as I can. The meaning of christmas, now, is an unheeded reminder to treat each other as we do this time of year all year long. Perhaps then Christmas could truly be special time of the year.

i'd research that.... because Christians havent always celebrated christmas.... it was more of a conversion method.... taken from a pagan holiday... but if im wrong, please tell me where i can find proof.

Regardless of its origins, Christmas is now, for many people, no more than a potlatch.

I know the JW's don't celebrate Christmas, and if they feel it's wrong, I have no problem with that. In fact, I admire them for their integrity in making the choice they do. However...

Regardless of when Christmas was first celebrated and regardless of some of the pagan symbolism that is a part of it, I still see it as a wonderful time for celebrating the birth of our Savior. I know that Jesus wasn't born on December 25. That makes no difference whatsoever to me. When I hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing "Oh Holy Night" or "Silent Night" or any one of numerous other Christmas carols, I am not celebrating anything pagan or anything I believe God disapproves of. I love seeing live nativity scenes, regardless of how historically correct or incorrect the details of the event may be depicted. Reading Luke's account of the Savior's birth and gathering with loved ones to celebrate the beginning of the most significant life ever lived is an enormous blessing to me. I wouldn't "opt out" of it for anything!
