What is the USA?

On this, the anniversary of the Declaration of Independance from the rule of England, I thought I would pose a siimple question to everyone. When you think of the United States of America, what do you think of? Is it positive or negative? If you are a citizen of the country, are you overall ashamed of our history or do you have pride? I would like to know your thoughts and reasoning for the way you view this country. Regardless of how you look at it though, I wish all of you a great holiday weekend.:)

Thanks you for that Terrywoodenpic. I am sorry, but I did not mean to insult you or any of the English friends on this sight, so in case I did, sorry.

No, not all of the state were under English rule, but we celebrate this date in recognition of the first step towards being a country. Thanks, for your input.

No offence given, no offence taken.
The English did not know how to handle a young active and changing country anyway.

A nation of trigger-happy, self-righteous lunatics. USAmerica in my book belongs to countries like Afghanistan and Burma, and most African countries, that I won't go to for any amount of money.

Of course I realize that there are exceptions, but that's my general view.

Thank you for your candid response. Yes, there are exceptions and I am sorry you feel that way. Hopefully you will come over and visit. Maybe we can change the perceptions that you have.

I think it has great scenery. The people are a different matter. The leader just happens to be a bit more war-happy than many of the citizens would like.

The United States of America is an amazing institution full to the brim with cultural and ethnic diversity unmatched by any other on the planet. In no way can it be claimed that it is perfect, but then who CAN make that assertion? I am a mutt, and can't really say what ethnicity I really come from for sure, so I am proud to call myself an American. This is where I fit in. Happy 4th everybody!!:woohoo:

I have to admit my assessment rather parallels Anders' -- and I'm a born-and-bred American.

Most American's are abysmally ignorant of their own history. They cannot intelligently discuss the acquisition of Panama; the American SW & California; Hawaii & the Philippines. They know nothing of American economic hegemony in Central and South America, they are unaware that America currently maintains >1,000 foreign military bases, they cannot recount Al Q'aida's clearly publicized reasons for the 9/11 attacks, they've never heard the term "economic hit-man."

Most Europeans would score higher on tests of US history and, especially, foreign policy, than the average American would. Of course, they have a free and diverse press.....

Thank you for the response Seyorni. BTW, the US did not acquire Panama, only the Panama Canal Zone, which was leased from the country.

Tell me why Panama is today a country independant of Columbia. Our "gunboat diplomacy" is the sole reason Panama became an independantAmerican puppet state.

For the most part, I hold a positive view of the U.S. Rarely, if ever, do my candidates ever get elected but, until recently that didn't really matter since our system is set up to balance out the extremists. Bubble boy seems intent on eliminating the checks and balances in our system....but then that's just my opinion.

All countries have things in their past that they're ashamed of and I don't see that we're any different nor do I see any point in dwelling on it. We're no better or worse than any other country on this planet.

The USA is a giant melting pot. Its made up of people from other countries, there really is no true American Way. Its just that being a country of so many diversities, we learn from others and make the best of what we have. I think of the US as a controlled atomic reaction. For everything I hate, there is something I love. For everything new, there is something old. For everything good, there is something evil. I dont think there is anyplace as ballanced as the US. But we dont like cricket... oh no... =/ but I love it.

I get to work monday. I get to feed this nation of a very vast and diverse culture. A nation of a currupt government. A nation were anything is ok until it offends you. A nation were I can tell people to F*** OFF when they give me crap about being Pagan.

There are some things I love about it, and some things I hate. There are sometimes I'm proud to be living here, and sometimes I hide behind the fact that I'm not a citizen. The government might do a little better, but then so could all countries'. One of the things I really love (besides high school football games) is the people.

I had no say in my place of birth; likewise, the particular government claiming sovereignty over the spot at the time was not of my doing. I take pride in accomplishments, not in fortuitous circumstances, therefore I feel no patriotism toward the government currently controlling my place of residence.

I do attempt though, for society's sake, to do my civic duty as a de facto citizen and criticize this government at every opportunity. After all, no-one can take pride in, or should be happy with, an unjust, wayward or corrupt government, and flaws are not likely to be corrected if they are not rooted out and exposed.
