What is wrong here?

I had this on another post but didn't want to take a chance of derailing it.

"I don't know if I'm going to continue on here or not. People can say offensive and hateful thing to me but if I say something that can be taken as an insult it will be.

For now I'll just try making sure more often that people know I'm insulting them. This is very out of character since I try to calm things instead of starting them.

Mebbe I'll start insulting people in the next post.

There are some great posters here. Maybe I should put half the users on 'ignore"."




I guess when you disagree with everyone you are held to some other standard.

Apparently if you believe in science there are no standards.

I like to think people can disagree without insulting each other.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, though...

Also, when a conversation has degraded into insults, its no longer productive anymore. Seems a waste of time to do anything but leave(unless you enjoy insults; some do).

Actually I strongly agree. Frankly this is one of the best sites on the net for not having insult contests that spiral out of control. The weakness here if any, is that people talk right past one another most of the time when it's the differences between religion and science. But it's never the religious ones hurling insults and hateful speech, it's always the believers in science.

I just don't know what's wrong with the believers. And I don't know if I can even discuss the apparent censoring of those who don't believe in science.

Well, no one should be insulting, denigrating, or smearing, regardless of what their worldview is.

Some do think they know to much and are infallible(regardless of what they think they 'know'). It can be like talking to a brick wall. Not a lot of fun to talk to walls, though. I just pick someone else to talk to.

Due to my experience, on more than one forum, I have the author of this thread on Ignore. There is a reason for that.

This mentality probably has something to do with it.
People would flip out and find it unacceptable for a scientist to make demands on a church amd clergy regarding what church doctrine must be ignored and what must be taught as fact.
Why is it so many people have a hard time finding it equally unacceptable when the church (and other laymen) try to make such demands of science and scientists?

It's easy to be angry and let it out in a post. That will probably escalate things and in the end it is a good thing we are not sitting next to each other with guns in easy reach.
Many times I delete half of a post because I know the comments I have thrown in at the end are out of an emotional reaction and won't contribute anything positive to the conversation. Sometimes I'm sure those comments have remained in the post.
There is something to be said for being human in all this disputation.

You should report any insults to staff.

I can't tell you you're playing victim; I don't know you well enough to know what you do. I think this is the first conversation I've ever had with you!

Well, I am autistic. I can be pretty blunt. I only "insulted" you a single time, though; when I called your reasoning pathetic.

I didn't mean it as an insult. I meant that your argumentation was derived from what the Stoics call pathos, making it pathetic. I can see why you would take it that way and I regret using that choice of word.

However, in that same thread, almost every single post of yours was intentionally insulting and inflammatory. I was far from the only user there who noticed and took issue with it. I handled you with far more grace and patience than you deserved.

I've tried that but I guess my heart wasn't in it because I take everything as a compliment.

I tend to not agree with anybody about any specifics. All some people know when their beliefs are challenged is insult.

But I still believe that the insults against everyone not supporting scientific doctrine, political correctness, and modern belief is harming many threads.
