What is wrong with those people who eat excessively?

There are some conditions, such as Prader-Willi Syndrome, which somehow affects the part of the brain which tells you when your stomach is full and satiated. They can eat a full meal, yet their brain is still telling them that they're starving.

For others, it might be psychological. Some may eat as a way of dealing with stress, just as some people might smoke a cigarette or have a drink to deal with stress. Food can be an addiction as well.

Something else also came to mind, at least in terms of how my own eating habits developed. I was kind of a finicky eater when I was a kid, although as I grew and developed wider tastes, I enjoyed eating a wide variety, yet still in relatively small portions. I wouldn't have to eat too much before I was full - even if it was something I really liked. This somehow really bothered people in my family and others I might have been eating with, who thought that I wasn't eating enough. So, they'd just push more food on me. So, by the time I hit my teenage years, I had a ravenous appetite, practically eating everything in sight.

Self-control in a world where many of us have access to abundance that our ancestors did not

For me, it's all about self-control

I'm 45, 155 lbs and eat just one meal a day

Also fast all day

It's just what works for me

When you are in the desert, what will you do? You probably would drink your own urine.

I'd rather look a little further north... like towards an udder place on the camel. Ya feel me?

Really? How can depressing person be able to keep 4 wives?

I've heard horror stories about one wife, let alone four! So that proves that Krishna is God... he had 16,108 wives. No mortal could put up with that.

How so? How can 4 wives make one sad?

What til the credit card bills come. Or they all synch up at that special time. I managed an office of women. Every so often it was like a planetary alignment from hormonal hell.

What is wrong with those people who eat excessively?

Prophet Luqman once said to his son: “O my son! If the stomach is full, one’s mental processes go to sleep, one’s wisdom is dulled, and one’s limbs refrain from worship.”

A man burped in the presence of the Prophet Muhammad and he said: “Keep your burps away from us, for the one who eats his fill the most in this world will be hungry for the longest time on the Day of Resurrection."

The Prophet said: “The child of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach. Sufficient for the child of Adam are a few morsels to keep his back straight. If he must eat more, then a third should be for his food, a third for his drink, and a third left for air.”

“Eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.” [Sûrah al-A`râf: 31]
Can you define excess in this context? Precisely? The quote of Luqman seems to indicate a full stomach is excess. The quote from mo indicates pretty much the same, but also implies a full stomach is a sin or somehow make one hungry on a particular day (i.e. makes no sense other than poetic rhetoric). And I"m not even sure who you refer to when you say 'The Prophet" in the final quote. You must be assuming that your world view is the only one and that everyone should know who you are referring too.

If you are truly concerned about 'what is wrong' with people who evereat, might I suggest you put down your scriptures and read the myriad of scientific and medical studies into the problem? Instead of implying that overeaters are somehow defective (you did say "what's wrong with")

Respectfully, but honestly!

Oh geez... apparently sovietchild saw someone enjoying their food and got offended. For some silly reason he HATES it when people enjoy life. I can't count the number of threads he's started where he moans about how some people enjoy life in ways that HE disagrees with. Not sure why, but he apparently believes that life is supposed to be miserable and if you ever have a good time you're doing it wrong. How sad and pathetic.
