Biphasic and polyphasic sleep: What is it and is it good for you?

Some sleep patterns mean a person will sleep once per day while others mean they sleep at intervals. However, the pattern that is most common in a population may or may not be the healthiest option for people.

This inconsistency means some individuals report that they are not getting enough sleep, irrespective of the number of hours they have per night.

This article discusses the type of sleep patterns that are known about, and how they affect a person's health and sleep hygiene.

I sleep once and taking naps is impossible for me. I have enough trouble sleeping as it is and it has always taken me at least a good few hours to go to sleep; nowadays it's about 4-5. Once I'm asleep, I sleep usually only for about 2-4 hours (4 if I'm very lucky) and it is not a deep sleep, but very light and permeated with dreams. Since dreams are REM sleep, i.e, not actual, real, energising sleep, I have about 3 and a half hours on a good night when I appear to have 4. This has been my pattern since I can remember.

I wake up during the pre-dawn early morning, read a little or play a game then go backup sleep. Doesn't matter what my sleep deficit is, or my bladder content (lol), I always wake up for a bit before the sun.

Gosh, RF is breaking up my sleep patterns, man! I think I hit Xs on most of the list except two check marks. I get a good six our sleep and a good thirty to hour nap. Like right now, I'm ready to clonk out. If I do, I'd be up all night.

Nice article.

Humour and sleep ... hmmm ...

This probly aint "funny" but best advice on sleep I have heard is to get to bed before 10 PM most nights if at all possible. Or even 9 PM!

Works for me - I usually wake up refreshed and ready 2 face another day!

I have "bizarre" dreams but usually no great recall of the content. Dreams are the one altered state of consciousness most of us experience. They seem perfectly "real" until you wake up.

"Once upon a time, I, Chuang Chou, dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, a veritable butterfly, enjoying itself to the full of its bent, and not knowing it was Chuang Chou. Suddenly I awoke, and came to myself, the veritable Chuang Chou. Now I do not know whether it was then I dreamt I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man."

Probly totally irrelevant - but interesting!

Cheers

I work to support a family. I am too busy to sleep more than once per day. Long as I get 4-6 hours of sleep I am good. But occasionally I get 8-10 hours of solid sleep in a single day, and even rarely get 12. I don't have a set schedule though, because of my career. I sleep when I get tired, and when my body is rested I wake up. I freed myself of circadian rhythm long ago.

Insomnia aside, I'd be much better off if I could always do the biphasic, with roughly 6 hours of night sleep and a good afternoon nap. But with my IBS giving me up to several trips to the bathroom at night to pee, a polyphasic may be better as it would allow me to work with the frequent interruptions rather than trying to work against them.

When I did inventory though, that was more of a "sleep? what's that? That time when I shut my eyes for longer than a blink when I get the chance?"

I try to sleep all night, but as I age, I find I have to get up to pee and sometimes I don't get back to sleep quickly.

You forgot the option in which the cat wakes me up at 5 am. :D

I sleep probably 8-10 hours a night. I might wake up once in the middle of the night but its pretty rare. Sometimes I will sleep maybe an extra hour or two in the day (usually 3-5pm) as I've found that I get a really deep sleep then.

I have found using the phone or laptop before I go to bed means I don't sleep very well and my head feels kind of scrambled first thing in the morning. So I've got into the habit of giving myself an hour (or a couple) without using the laptop or just listening to music to settle down.

I think that makes me a Monophastic sleeper.

I chose "The sleeper must awaken". It sounds like a reference and I don't know to what. But I have four kids and they definitely hold by this principle when it comes to my sleep.

Sort of carefree. If I sleep, I sleep soundly. If I do not get to sleep, I will get a cup of coffee and a cigarette and enjoy it in the quiet of the night. Sleep will come when it does. I don't try to force it because it does not happen that way.

6 hours at night and 1 hour siesta in the afternoon in a couch in my office. That way I can work till midnight and still wake at sunrise. :)
