Feel like home?

Having been in my new house less than a year, it doesn't really feel like home yet?

What makes a home feel like a home vs just another place you happen to be staying at?

Familiarity, personal touches, sentiments decoration, friendships.

I fell in love with this house the moment i walked through the front door to view it. When we moved here it was almost 3 years before i stopped calling it our house and revered to calling it home.

For me, an essential element is restoring the land. Ripping out the ugly rock landscaping and replacing it with wildlife habitat (a small prairie restoration) was one of the first things I did, along with planting a couple trees and some native bushes for critters to shelter in. They are enjoying them all right now, perching on the ruby-red branches of the dogwoods, munching away at the bird seed I leave out. This is not just my home, after all, nor should it be. :D

In the interior, essential elements are, well... the Elements. Shrines to each of them, that is, and putting things in spaces where the energy of the space wants them. But for muggle folk I suppose you could just call that interior design. I just do it with a different purpose and mentality; sort of a feng shui I guess.

Knowing what is and isn't dangerous or is troublesome. In a hotel there are things you do not know, such as whether there are bedbugs, who stayed before you, what kind of soap there is, if someone next door will be noisy or not. In a new home you may find plumbing problems, vermin, repairs and dangers. Once you know what they are, you are home. You can plan what to do such as what to repair and what to reinforce.

You may find yourself feeling at home if you stay somewhere that is immaculately clean, predictable and comfortable. Some people will still need time before they feel that way, because there are always unknowns.

I'll take all your evil old rocks.

I've been trying to figure this out for awhile. We moved from a house that was uncomfortably small to a house that had more than enough room. The tiny house also didn't have proper furnishings, and things were just set out here or there...

About a year ago, I started to re-examine why, after 4ish years, house was not home, and why old tiny house was, even though it was too small to be enjoyable. The conclusions I came up with were that tiny house was so small, we had everything set up for our needs, not convention. The second was positive memories.

I couldn't do a lot about the second; those things just happen, or don't. But I could do something about the first. What the hell do I need a living room for? Why a dining room? Our bedroom was a dark, depressing place that was turning into an out of the way clutter holder... so, I gutted everything, and started over. The rooms have been repurposed, and every last corner is slowly getting repainted, redecorated.

Its a work in progress, but I'm happy, and its home.

I don't know, I find myself a bit uncomfortable in any place that is too clean. I'm afraid of messing everything up.

On the flip side, I'm uncomfortable in any place that is too dirty. I'm afraid it'll mess me up.

Predictability ends as soon as my 'tribe' enters...

I'd say any principal residence in which one feels comfortable is home. What makes us comfortable in a residence? Control over the space: who occupies it, how it is decorated, how the rooms are used, and the absence of unusual threats such as hostile neighbors or excessive crime.

IMO if you are single, its you that makes it a home by making it you, making it what you like, what you want to see, what you want to come "home" to.

I'll add that the feeling of home (outside of my childhood home) grew gradually over a number of years.

The physical house means very little. A person can rest their hat anywhere. Home is gazing into the eyes of your True Love. Even when your True Love is not around, one takes a piece of that Home with them.

That's what I see. It's very clear!!

Family, time, individual vibration, comfort, Mom,
It took me at least 5 years before this house felt like a home. It's been about 25 years now. But I concur that it will take some time. The more you're actually in it helps.

Idk, I'm just wondering, "How does he ever expect to be conformable in a house that small"..
