Well, I'm afraid that's not helpful to me when it comes to expressing what may or may not make me "good."

Exactly. I'm sure most of us would think of ourselves as relatively decent people, but to others we may seem like anything but. Going on the example of the OP, I'm sure Hitler saw himself as a pretty decent guy. Does that make him a good person? Not really, no.

Fools think they're good people because they're nice to their friends and family. Anybody can do that. It's easy. A persons character really comes out by how they treat their enemies. Do they love and forgive people who are hard to love and don't deserve? If they do there's a good chance you're looking at a good person

I am not sure i can define myself as a good person, not being used to making value judgments
of any persons ... I guess the ex PM Helen Clark perhaps though i was, or the local mayor
who granted me a Civic Award for services to the community ...

I Work at the local hospital, volunteer as an Ambulance officer, founded the Head Injury Soc.
bullied govt. for disability act, rehabilitation services and Cycle helmet laws, etc...

not sure it counts as good so much as civic responsibility
