What Should Be Done About Erotic Dance?

Which of these two strategies would you choose?

I don't know to whom you are addressing your question, but I'm willing to take a shot at it. I think it's not a matter of women erotic dancers objectifying women, but rather a matter of the audience of a female erotic dancer objectifying her. And, similarly, it's a matter of the audience of male erotic dancer objectifying him. Does that make any sense?

That is what I meant, bad wording on my part.

I just find it a bit annoying that people tend to focus on how the audience objectifies women but the same people usually do not have a problem with men being objectified in the same way.

If we want to look at how the audience views it then attitude in society in regards to body, sexuality and sex needs to change. You can take away the dancers but you still have porn, pin ups, images, movies, casual sexual relationships, etc. Hope that makes sense.

But women are objectified PERIOD.The audience is her world.Dancer or not dancer. As long as its reasonably acceptable to objectify women in general. How would you expect it to stop(get better) in exotic dance?

Then I guess every woman should be an exotic dancer to NOT be objectified?(to hault it temporarily while she danced ?)

I say ban it, tired of seeing it in music videos. If erotic dancing was banned then a lot of female singers would be put out of work. Beyonce, Rihana and Spears(not sure if she is alive).
Erotic dancing has ruined music so if it is banned for at least a significant amount of time, truly talented female artist would arise instead of the garbage we have now .

Ban erotic dancing for the betterment of the music industry. 90$ lap dance 9% stage effects and 1% music does not count as a talented art

I think when that happens it's just as bad as when it's women being objectified. Men (and women) also get objectified in many, many other ways than sexually objectified. For instance, racially, ethnically, and even, say, as "merely an athlete", or "just a movie star". In my opinion, you are spot on to hint at the much larger nature of objectification that merely the sexual objectification of women.

I see you have a gift for looking at the big picture. That does make sense. I would only point out that in doing something about objectification, one must start somewhere, and somewhere is sometimes small at first.

This is the reason I do not watch music videos anymore. It is unnecessary. If I wanted to see a half naked chick shake her booty id go to a club.

Thanks.

For me personally, I think that a lot of the issues may be weeded out if the extreme categories of porn are weeded out which give out bad messages regarding women. I am no angel, I watch it from time to time but a lot of the stuff I come across is just horrifying from my point of view. I am not sure if weeding out porn is possible though.

Why?

When you think of something, please let me know. I'm quite interested.

I have an idea.

Give the workers a voice. Whether it's through unionizing, through awareness campaigns, education, classes, documentary work, etc. The industry workers must be given a voice.

I would like to leave this right here

Thanks, Horrorble! Let me see if I can get it to display...

No, I tried to get your image to display in this thread, but it doesn't work. People should click on your link, though.

Excellent! There's a documentary about a club in San Francisco that unionized. I wish I could recall the name of the documentary now.

I think unions would vastly improve things. Awareness campaigns, education, and classes would be great too.

People think I am harsh on sex or something but I am not. I just believe that if a person must use sexuality as a tool to prove any sort of worthiness or talent you are only proving you yourself are talentless.

If I was to count the number of hip-hop, rape and R&B songs that used sex as a theme vocally or visually in a video it would be immense. "Artists" as of now such as Robin Thicke have now used FULL NAKED women in their videos followed by erotic dancing .

Somehow this song became very successful :thud:

They don't use sex, they use female bodies dressed in a particular way, acting in a particular way.

Sex has beed used in music videos before. Pretty much all the 80s music vids should be explanation enough, either that or Marylin Manson music videos.

I get the idea that it would. Even from somebody who has been burned by unions before ;), even I can see it catching on to an industry that literally has no option for the workers to have any bargaining power.

I'd like to see the documentary on the SF club you mentioned.

A quick google search had this young woman catch my eye on what I just considered: Audacia Ray - Home

From the link:
Audacia Ray is the founder and director of the Red Umbrella Project, where she works to amplify the voices of people involved in the sex industry. At the Red Umbrella Project, Audacia hosts monthly live storytelling events and a weekly podcast, leads media and storytelling workshops, and provides communications support and leadership for individuals and communities who wish to tell their stories and reframe public debate. In 2010, the Village Voice named the Red Umbrella Diaries series and Audacia’s blog Waking Vixen to their Best of NYC list. As the Program Officer for Online Communications and Campaigns at the International Women’s Health Coalition and a communications consultant for the Global Network of Sex Work Projects, Audacia has worked with activists all over the world to build communications strategies around challenging topics like youth sexual health, sexual rights, HIV, and sex work.
