What value has the currency of human life?

In this day and age there seems there is a shortage of everything but people, maybe that's why a lot of disasters are measured in money and not lives.
So what is the value of a human life, especially when we have been killing, torturing, raping each other since we've been here?

We sorta measure the value of human life to a degree already. A few example include:

1) Death penalty. Irregardless if you are pro or con for this or to what degree it is an illustration of man measuring the value of life from the victim's viewpoint, and the attackers, the immediatly affected by the death and societies in general.

2) The speed limit. When various countries measure speed limits against road conditions and traffic they run a regression analysis and other statistical data that included a projection of the number of lives that will be lost and the number of crashes that will occur against the backdrop of a reasonable speed to drive

3) Competition for resources: As money is the primary median for exhange in free market societies where people compete for resources a percentage will be without a job or homeless or be in some other position which makes them more vunderable to diese or sickness that leads to death. This is espcially true of the elderly.

4) War. When the USA went into the ME each time rest assured the goverment ran a statistcal analysis of projected deaths and wounded and factored that in their decision. They wisely choose not to release such information.

There are many more ways but something I would find of interest would be the country of India's take on the value of human life. With a billion people in an area smaller than Texas I am wondering where their thoughts lie on the subject.

When somebody asks "how much is something worth" the only way of responding is by giving them the equivilant amount in a form which they are familiar with. However, there is no currency exchange for human life so such an answer is not possible. It all becomes very vague and difficult to defend.

A possible answer might be, a human life is worth as much as it is useful to you, just like anything else.
