Since the big 'change' on the forums, and the "What's New" button replacing the the 'New Threads' widget, I can't help but notice the same topics are often what is getting the action.

It makes sense that what a person is interested in is what takes their attention. Which makes me wonder...

Outside of RF, what three topics would you say you put the most attention into informing yourself about? This could be reading articles, watching videos, listening to podcasts, however you take your information. What do you most often find yourself searching out? Political news(and for what country)? Healthy living? Comedy or entertainment? Transgender rights? The Rapture? Lawn maintenance?

What do you spend your time on?

Video Games (Elden Ring atm), Youtube (commentary), and Grounded News (so I can compare and contrast current events)

These are the main ways I procrastinate when I have time to burn and important things I need to be doing, like my taxes or renewing my lease

YouTube commentary on what? :D

What's Grounded News?

Its important to have things to spend time on when you're avoiding taxes and lease renewal. ;)

Lately I've been watching random videos on history, atheism vs. theology, animal biology, and Diablo 4.

For history, early modern history and it's transition to modern times has been piquing my interest lately - especially in terms of the west

For atheism vs theism, it's mostly been videos by christians talking about atheists and atheist call in shows having debates/discussions with theists. I Wish There was a call in show ran by Christians for athiests to call in too, but I haven't found any yet. The two main channels I have been watching are Atheist Experience and Talk Heathen. The second one I like more because it's less confrontational

And as for biology it's mostly been about evolutionary biology and various eras - nothing too specific. If the image looks click-baity enough, it usually works on me

Grounded News is an app that compares and contrasts many different news sources so you can get an overview for what stories left, right, and center are reporting. It's a good way to get an overall feel for what spin and angle each side is trying to portray

"......The Rapture, Lawn Maintenance.......", love it. You could be a comedy scriptwriter. (By the way, why is the selection of emojis on the revamped forum so unexpressive and feeble? I wanted to post one here but could not find anything suitable.)

On the question, I suppose my three would be
- current affairs, including politics,
- science and technology news, including medicine and climate change (but excluding IT, which bores the arse off me), and
- little domestic things like cookery and gardening.

Might as well have a tidy lawn to present Christ with when he returns, right?

Unexpressive, overly expressive, either way, I often don't find anything suitable, either. I think I'd trade in some of the faces for a tea kettle, a rusty car, and a dog peeing on a fence.

I'm with you on the cookery(would definitely be one of my 3).

I finally gave ChatGPT a shot... for the purpose of finding regional recipes with ingredients that I need to 'use or lose' from the fridge.

Yeah I miss Mr Green, the one with cross-eyes indicating disgust or confusion and the one expressing shock. The new ones seem terribly bland and childish. Also I think there was a nice one for love which was what I wanted for your post.

I'm not going anywhere near ChatGPT. That is on my list to avoid like the plague, along with all the social media I don't subscribe to. (I was once on Linked In but got out fast when I discovered it was reading my address book without telling me.)

I wanted the informative one there... I miss the purple eye roll guy myself...

I considered such privacy issues when signing up, but I figured the the language barrier I face when researching stuff(food or religion) was worth the risk.

I also avoid social media, though its people that know me in real life I'm dodging there, rather than online entities.

My topics of interest sometimes change depending on the time, but these are the topics I have been most interested in for the last couple of years, in no particular order:
  • Technology and software breakthroughs, especially within the fields of data science and AI.
  • Mathematics and language. I periodically revisit resources for each (in both Arabic and English, in the case of language) to make sure I don't forget what I know or become rusty.
  • Marxism, capitalism, and the politics between the West and the Global South throughout the 20th century up to and including the present. I'm especially interested in how Marxist anti-imperialism has found appeal in some parts of the Global South at multiple points since the 20th century.
  • Automotive engineering and heavy machinery, such as excavators and mining trucks.
  • Video games, horror movies, and metal music.
On any given day, it's a safe bet to assume that I have read or watched something about one or more of the above topics.

I hadn't heard the term 'Global South' used before(looked it up :D).

I enjoy your perspective on things; too many in my sphere forget that there's anything but 'West'(and the interests of these other regions are just as important as the West's).

I just find it a bit creepy to put too much of my life on-line where lots of unknown people can see it. But I suppose that's rather what I do on RF, so maybe I'm inconsistent. I've actually now met in person a couple of people whose acquaintance I have made via RF, which is something I never expected, and which my other friends consider somewhat risky behaviour.

(As you know, you would be on my list to meet, if you lived anywhere close. And I have had an invitation to contact @Vee if I ever make it to Bordeaux, which I might take up one day. But it's a long drive down from Vannes.)

What recipes did ChatGPT come up with? Did they make sense?

I spend a lot of time on YouTube where my interests vary. Topics would be religion, witchcraft, the occult, politics, music, history, science (fiction/nonfiction), movies, motorcycling, camping, storytelling, mystery, horror, crafts, cooking, the list might would go on.

I put a lot of myself on RF as well. But, its somewhat private, in a way... the information here wouldn't ever likely be connected back to me. Its possible, but highly unlikely. And as far as people met on the internet being risky, I feel that's overblown. I've met much more dicey people in real life than I ever have online(with the internet, if you feel someone's suspicious, you can 'block' them much more easily than a family member or coworker).

If you're ever in Iowa, stop by my area and say hello!

Yes, very much so! It was able to give me recipes for places that I sometimes struggle to find recipes for, due to the language barrier.

Thanks for the invitation. But Iowa is not on my list, I'm afraid. Actually I don't think I'll visit the USA again. But if you ever come to London, you must let me know of course, so we can meet.

I keep up with an ex-Christian message board, an atheist message board, and twitter.
Being a sociologist I keep up with all the depressing news about social issues.
I also follow NYTimes Cooking, and a cooking message board filled with lovely people.
