While he’s evil, he’s not stupid. So why float this predictably unpopular AHCA bill in the first place? Is this just a cold calculation / opening bid to arrive at where the GOP really wants to be in the end? A way to soften us up?

I chalk it up to confirmation bias. They can't believe it's really that unpopular. And they are living in terror of the extreme right punishing them for not doing what they said they'd do.

I suspect if they succeed, then the reaction next year will be much worse than 2010 when the Democrats were slaughtered at the polls.

I suspect McConnell believes the voters won't penalize him or his party.
