Whats the point of voting?

Most of the people most of the time dont know what party is better especially about going with Europe.

We don't know what the truth is from the media so whats the point in voting?

Do you prefer Trump? Then don't vote. Let the idiots vote for you, and that's what you'll get.

You can use the internet, people dig up stuff on all the candidates all the time, in America anyways.

I doubt your vote will matter, because Trump will win anyway, the elections have been rigged for like 60 years now. 2 x Democrats, 2 x Republicans, 1 x Republicans, 2 x Democrats, 3 times Republican, 2 times Democrats etc. You cant stop the progress and development it takes shape in, unless you overthrow the government, which is impossible, because people wont do these sort of things anymore and the FBI or CIA are going to sniff you out before you even plan anything. They will create a fake story on the news, while youre going to get shot or end up in prison. True story.

I can definitely understand how easy it is to become cynical.
I'm not sure where you live, but in the US, you at least have a say regarding selecting nominees (granted, only for the two main parties).
If you live in a swing state, you even have a small sway on the outcome of the General Presidential election.
Sadly, if you live in a Red or Blue state, your vote doesn't usually mean a lot.

That's the sad nature of the electoral game...I mean process.
Our votes don't fully count, and the two main parties have a stranglehold on the political scene.

Because there is so much more on the ballot than just the national election. You get to vote on state reps, city reps, county and city ordinances, and county and circuit judges. The local races have a much larger impact on you than the national one.

I get to register an opinion about what agenda I support (Libertarian).
I never win, but people tolerate my carping more easily when they know I voted.
How do you find the motivation to keep doing it?
I am thinking I want to begin backing the Green Party, but they also have no chance.

I know that they have been working with the Libertarian Party to attempt to open the debates to third parties.
I hope that they make headway. Any party with a sizable following should be allowed to contend for political office, including the White House.

I enjoy it, & it takes little effort (voting by mail).

A very good point. Local elections are very important. I am only just starting to become more involved locally myself.
I have a town hall meeting tomorrow. :)

As of now, it is pointless for a person in a non-battleground state to bother voting for President. Due to the irrational winner-take-all Electoral College system of electing the President, the majority in your state will decide which candidate will get all of the electoral votes from your state, and most states are solidly red or solidly blue--there is no question as to which candidate will receive the state’s electoral votes.

This circumstance is on its way to changing as a result of the National Popular Vote Compact, which states legislatively adopt as a pledge to cast their own electoral votes for the winner of the national popular vote. The NPVC will go into effect when enough states adopt the NPVC to account for a majority of the electoral votes: http://www.nationalpopularvote.com/

If your state has not adopted the NPVC, pester your state legislators about it. The vast majority of Americans want the President to be elected by the outcome of the national popular vote. This will change the current situation where Presidential candidates spend almost all of their time and money campaigning in battleground states, and, most importantly, will put an end to the current massive voter apathy where most people know that their own vote for President will be either wasted (for a candidate who is already assured to win in one’s own state) or simply not count (for a candidate who is already assured to not win in one’s own state, regardless of whether the candidate has a chance to win the office).

Voting legally demonstrates that you are part of that organization, and is evidence that you are subject to its rules (laws).

I usually vote for the lesser evil. I generally view most politicians as either corrupt or incompetent so I don't expect much. Some of them though are worse than others so I cast a vote on those who, in my opinion, will be less harmful. It's different when it comes to the local government elections. I vote for the people I know, they often live in my neighborhood.

I think that the selection of the President be mandated by a somewhat modified Electoral College. In my plan each state gets one vote. The citizens of each state vote for the person of their choice; whichever candidate gets the most votes wins the single vote of the state; note DC is counted as a state. Then the candidate with the most State votes wins:D

It's a joke son just a joke

The vast majority of Americans want the President to be elected by the outcome of the national popular vote.

These two posts demonstrate the problem with defining a fair vote. Nous wants a straight popular vote which will give the presidential selection to the five most populous states. Esmith wants every state to get a single vote, which completely ignores the relative populations in each state.

The Electoral College is the compromise which gives more weight to the large population states whilst still giving the smaller populous states a say in the election.

Trump, in running on a lark, will be nothing more than a lark in the historical record.
