What's the thing with alcohol?

Eight new threads (including this one) are one way or another about alcohol. That says to me there must be a keen fascination with the stuff. Having only once in my life been drunk, over 30 years ago and only rarely sipping at a glass of the loopy juice i just do not see the fascination of alcohol.

Would anyone like to enlighten me?

It doesn't take much to feel loosened and giddy and warm. Amd once in awhile it's fun.

Nope. It would be a long journey best done in person.
Suffice to say one of the things I miss the most is a small bar where you can talk, a couple of friends, and some really good quality beer.

It is interesting. Alcohol does seem to be one of those subjects that invites discussion just as the topic of sex does.

Unlike sex, almost any adult can get alcohol if they want.

I once knew someone who went to bed drunk, woke up drunk, and started drinking again. Sadly he passed away from doing such things at a young age of 49.

I read once that modern societies, especially in the West do not have rites of passage and those have been replaced by young people escaping to alcohol, drugs and other vices that are seen as signs of adulthood. I do not know if this is true, but it does make some sense.

Good question......Australian is known for its love affair with alcohol...the drug of choice for those who do not believe that they are drug addicts. Any drug that takes away good sense and leads to violence or poor decision making, is not an asset in life IMO. Perhaps the fact that you feel good before you kill yourself has something to do with it...? I don’t get it either....

One only has to be the only person NOT drunk at a gathering to understand why everyone must drink......they have no idea how stupid they look and act because they are all doing it and won’t remember it tomorrow.

Monday at the workplace is a sad scene with those trying to function after a weekend that will largely be a blur....

Cab drivers having to clean up vomit out of their vehicles several times a night...... eeeeww...

Alcohol abuse is the world’s most common drug problem and such is the level of abuse and dependence that they can never ban the stuff that causes so much trouble for so many people.....not to mention the drain on the health system trying to cope with the aftermath of weekend binges. Drugs and alcohol...what a recipe for disaster....and every ER in the world is under threat because of it. Who knew that being a paramedic or an ER doc would need police protection?

Alcohol is the scourge of the world, not because there is anything wrong with the product, but because people can not control how much they drink and the impact it can have on them physically, mentally, and in their relationships.

Yep...but having said that, I can honestly say that I have not known an alcohol dependent person who was not a self-medicating depressive. The downside of that is the treadmill effect of drowning those damning thoughts in alcohol and then after a drunken episode, having to deal with the shame of what they did but often can’t remember, which led to them drinking again to blot it out.....it’s a cycle that is hard to break if they do not seek help. Death from liver failure is too often the outcome.

Yeah, its certainly not the ideal.

Some are unable to seek help. Others are unwilling, thinking they've got this on their own, or are unable to see the harm its causing them.

Sadly the guy I knew thought he didn't have a problem because to him it had became a normal part of his life.

Alcohol can be wicked if abused. Sadly the abuse is many times overlooked by friends because they say "that's who he is".
I always said said "No. Thats who he has became because of the alcohol".
