Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Well, where?

A little while ago, my husband and I's sleeping situation changed greatly. We went from having an average bed, in an average room to sleeping on a roll out mat in the library(which was once a dining room).

At first, we had just taken the mattress off the bed and laid it in the library, pushing it against a wall during the day, but it got cumbersome. The mat can be stored in a tote during the day without much trouble.

When we were using the mattress, there wasn't a lot of change in comfortability for me. My husband experienced positive change. However, when we went from mattress to mat, some pain I'd been dealing with for years significantly decreased.

I guess where you sleep matters.

So, where did you sleep last night?

Have you had any other places that you slept that were memorable? (Either positive or negative?)

So, where did you sleep last night?

I have been using a portable mattress for the last few months and sleeping alone in our lounge. I sleep at different times from my family, so having the option to make the room pitch-black whenever I want is a major plus. I also watch horror movies here after killing the lights. :D

Have you had any other places that you slept that were memorable? (Either positive or negative?)

Positive: a room on a cruise ship that functioned as a hotel. I was sleeping just a few feet away from the Nile. It was a gorgeous sight and unique experience.

Negative: the floor of an abandoned gym in the army. The gym was dusty, infested with giant ants, and poorly ventilated. We spread out our blankets and slept on the extremely hard wooden floor. After a few days of that, pretty much my whole body was sore. We moved to the barracks at that point, thankfully.

I also slept on the ceramic floor of a platform in open air during nighttime guard duty in winter. I wore three layers and stayed under a blanket but was still shivering.

I got a story about this.

When I was still living at my old apartment my parents brought my extra-long twin memory foam mattress to my apartment with a quick trip in a small mover's van. I've actually been wanting something bigger for some time, and I saw that someone threw away their full sized bed on the curb so I grabbed it and its box spring and brought it to my apartment. After sleeping on it for a week I realized I really didn't need the memory foam mattress and threw that one away. My parents were so pissed at me for awhile for doing that.

That full sized mattress is now in my current apartment, in my bedroom. I find it difficult to sleep on anything but that, honestly. It's firmer than the memory foam mattress and overall just a really nice bed to sleep on. I never was able to thank the woman who threw it out...

A dark room can be nice. Strangely, I've been sleeping in front of a glass door... I find the light blaring in in the morning doesn't bother me as much as it would have years ago, and that waking up and seeing a perfect view of a star lit sky worth any inconvenience.

What is a portable mattress like? Is it of the air variety, or is it more of a roll up deal? Or something else?

Your army sleeping experiences sound miserable! Did the ants bite?

We've gotten a few roadside treasures, but never a bed. Bedbugs are a problem in this area; that one would be awfully risky.

Though I totally would have 15-20 years ago, when they were unheard of here.

They weren't common in that apartment until the dumpster divers and drug addicts moved into the building; which is ironic because that's exactly the reason why the woman who owned the mattress got rid of it. She was moving out.

Now my mom wants to give me her old queen sized bed but 1 - it doesn't have a box spring and 2 - a queen sized bed would probably be too big for my bedroom, especially now that I have a desk area set up in there now.

Sometimes you want what you want, and don't want what you don't want, unfortunately. :(

I've never liked large beds because they aren't worth the room they take up. My husband and I have mostly used a full. Someone gave us a queen sized at one point, but when got rid of it because it was simply too large.

In my chair, in front of the computer, headphones on and YouTube on auto. I had some weird dreams.

Were the weird dreams directly from having YouTube on?

Usually I sleep on a futon, 140 x 200 cm. (4'6 x 6'8) It doesn't matter that it's that big, I have plenty of room under the bed.

Yep. I had a teacher lecture at me.

Yep. I had a teacher lecture at me.

I think when we had that big bed, our house was the size of a postage stamp, and even navigating the bedroom was difficult. Under the bed was most certainly full.

We tried a futon for awhile, but it fell apart. I think it was probably just not a good quality one.

I was always intrigued by the bunk beds that had a futon on the bottom. That would be fun to have as a kid.

Hope your lecture was at least interesting!

I'd love to wake up to such a sight! Do you live in an area with light pollution low enough to let you see stars at night?

What is a portable mattress like? Is it of the air variety, or is it more of a roll up deal? Or something else?

A folding one that looks roughly like this:

We got it for a folding bed, but I repurposed it and now use it on the floor instead. :D

The ants only bit me once or twice that I recall. The mosquitoes, on the other hand, were brutal. I needed to buy a bug-repellent spray as soon as I went on break because of them.

There's light pollution here, limiting some of the stars you see, but there's still enough visible that one can appreciate the view.

Looks like a comfortable enough way to sleep to me. Where do you store it when not in use? Storage has been our biggest issue since going 'bedroom free'.

Mosquitos are the worst...

I sleep on a daybed in the family room. Like my mom, I'm a very light sleeper and get a better, more restful nights sleep when I've no other people or pets in the room, so my husband and I sleep separately. It's kind of nice, having a space and time alone to decompress. But we do make it a point to still have evening time together before going our separate ways.

Sometimes less bodies in the bed would be nice... the night before last, I woke up and counted 8 cats in the 'bed'...

On the foam mattress I own. Boss and I haven't slept together for more than 46 years of our marriage. We value sleep over being kicked, snored at, and many other interruptions of sleep that happened the first 4 months or so. Such a simple idea.

I still sleep on the Vispring* mattress I bought on my return from Dubai, in 1987. I get backache in almost all the other beds I sleep in, apart from really good hotel beds. However I get less of a stiff back now, after doing some side plank exercises a physio recommended to strengthen my trunk laterally and improve spinal stability. I turn the mattress every 3 months or so (these days I enlist the help of my son, to avoid er, damaging my back doing it) and it still seems fine 35 years on. But I'm only 65-67kg (~145lb)so I haven't compressed it too much I guess.

I quite like sleeping in a tent, but need to unroll a special memory foam mattress to put the sleeping bag on, if I'm not to wake up with back ache.

Last night i slept in our very comfortable bed in our white on white bedroom.

Most uncomfortable place, on a blanket on a pebble beach on a chilly night in wales.

A close second is fully dressed at a student party, i flaked out on a bare wooded floor from too much cramming. Woke up, the party was over and i was in agony.

Best place. The Aman Tokyo. 4 days of complete luxury.

White on white! I almost fainted at that idea... how do you keep all the kitty paw prints off of everything?
