Ahhhhhhhhhh, yes! The U.K. where the gov'ment does't trust it's
citizens with guns OR knives.
Or b-b guns, or replica bat'leth's either.
(Star Treks Worf's battle blade.)

Probably because we in the colonies shot our way free from British
Imperialism.
As did other "colonies".
The Brits of that era were the ultimate racists.
Any people not British were inferior.
Super glad to know what attitude has waned over the years.
It has hasn't it?

That's... um... informative :D

There are a limited number of options you can have in a poll so rather than pick countries at random, the first nine countries in the poll are based on statistics for the number of internet users in the world. They are ranked in order with China having the most in the world down to Germany in ninth place, based on the statistics avaliable (see below). I thought this might be more interesting and useful to see how representative RF is of the internet as a whole.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_Internet_users

This thread is not intended for people to be specific about where they live as I realise people value their anonymity (myself included), but I was just curious to see our geographic distribution. I've always thought RF had lots of American members but I'm hoping I'll get some surprises as well :)

Voted "Other" as I live in the UK.

Voted others, since I live in Switzerland.

What was England's greatest gift to the world?
AMERICA!
You've got that the wrong way round. America was the world's greatest gift to England! Most of our bigots and religious extremists went there, which is why the USA has 25% fundies and we have only 2%.

You have a rather skewed version of history....but then...I'm ok with that

While your distrust of my culture is noted, it is laudable to not take organisations' word at face value! Freedom House has some legitimate criticisms to be made about it. But if you put together enough groups' reports you generally get a good picture. A more easily trusted organisation is Reporters Without Borders, which also publishes reports on freedom of the press and freedom of information. They have Algeria come out vaguely in the middle - https://rsf.org/en/ranking/2016,
It's not about culture,it's about source of information.

We had freedom of speech in press and privet TV and Parliament.

Yes not every thing told by Western sources is should be verified/checked.

Same thing to all sources.

Haha! I liked the ones I understood. Wouldn't do me much good to be friends with an Algerian on Facebook - I don't speak Arabic, French or any Berber languages :(
No problem, I believe @Smart_Guy and @Debater Slayer admire Algeria freedom of speech :)

But freedom of speech on Facebook hasn't been highlighted as a problem in Algeria! Problems are with freedom of the press, in particular in relation to criticism of government figures by journalists in addition to blasphemy laws. Blasphemy laws are of course in and of themselves a major affront to free speech.

I don't say we are reach Western level, but I think we are advanced in freedom of speech in Arab world.

I remember a Joke about:

A morocoan met an Algerian , the Algerian challenge the Morocon about freedom of speech,

Algerian said : I can insult and mock our president Bouteflika, could you do the same in Moroco ?

Morocoan: Yes , we can insult and mock president Bouteflika.
