Which historical event would you change?

What I mean is to make it so that it never happened.
I would change WW2, an obvious one, but will probably be the most popular.

Temporarily Deactive.
I would change the following historical events. See if you can guess what they are.

1. 10-14-2004
2. 9-11-2001
3. 9-01-1939

As a fan of sci-fi involving temporal causality, you've set my head is spinning in ways it never has before.:bounce And to think I was pondering mundane stuff like 'what if Hitler hadn't been born?' or 'what if slavery had been outlawed in the US Constituion'?' :p

Well, mine would be the Great Schism. Had that not occurred Christendom would be in a much better state and, on a purely selfish note, I'd be able to visit the local RC church 5 minutes walk from my house rather than making the long journey I have to now. Of course, it's pretty difficult to see exactly what might have prevented the Great Schism from happening - perhaps if the emperor St. Justinian had succeeded in reconquering the western Empire?

1. Prevented the English from ever dominating the Irish and their land.

2. Prevented the Roman Empire's adoption of christianity as it's main religion.

3. Altered the Treaty of Versaille to of lessen the damage on Germany (in hopes of preventing WWII).

4. Prevented the Deaths of Cliff Burton, Randy Rhoads, Dimebag Darrell, Oystein Aarseth, Chuck Schuldiner and Quorthon. All in the hopes of having an even better world of Metal today.

I don't know if i would change any as i feel that all things happen for a reason. Who is to say that if you changed something to prevent a bad event in history that something worse may not happen?

I must admit I think the same as you - The immediate instinct was something much like Hitler being born, but what you say makes sense.:)

Along the lines of Jensa's reply, my personal choice would be to go back and save the Tasmanian Tiger.

For a broader choice, though, I'd like to see what might have happened if the library at Alexandria hadn't burned.
