Doing good deeds/works for salvation or faith in a god for salvation. Which one, and why? I am going back to square one trying to figure this stuff out.

'Believing in a higher authority who intercedes in your fate based on your charitable deeds' is a common theme in most religions as far as I know.

Neither, because there's more to it. Certainly doing good deeds is a necessity. You can't be some cruel uncaring ogre and hope to get some place. Character development is important.

Good deeds, IMO.

But I don't believe we need to be "saved" from anything; I believe we're "saved" (to use this term) by Divine grace, and this requires no effort -- or belief -- on our part.

Both. Imagine salvation means arriving in good health and in time to the destination which is the best place for you to go. Surely you do not know the way so faith is needed. You must proceed to get there. "Proceed" is a verb which means "works". God knows the way to the place that is right for you. But you must follow the directions. You cannot be over there doing your own thing and expect to be magically delivered to your place.

As i see it, I believe doing good deeds is good enough. but others would disagree that you need faith in God the holy spirit and the son of God. (one God)

But to believe that there is only one God doesn't make much sense. I believe that the one true God made Gods which made more Gods which that then made us. :D

God of Plants.

God of Trees.

God of Rain.

God of tornado.

God of thunder.

God of Life.

God of lighting.

God of Nice.

God of evil. :D

There is a maxim in the Baha'i Writings that says:

"By faith is meant, first, conscious knowledge, and second, the practice of good deeds."

~ Abdu'l-Baha, Baha'i World Faith, p. 383

and another one:

"Let deeds, not words, testify to thy faith, if thou art a man of true learning."

~ Abdu'l-Baha, Memorials of the Faithful, p. 201

I'll be damned! I hate the god of nice.

I don't believe in salvation, but actions are generally far more meaningful and potent than mere words. And they are definitely more potent than unspoken words (faith/belief).

Faith alone in God' to save. Works then follow and flow from a transformed and grateful heart. :cross:

Good works if anything. I was having this discussion with a friend just yesterday; I would think that God would care about people striving for a better world than joining his fan club.

As I said in another thread just a short time ago is that Christians (are supposed to want to) do good deeds because they want to, not because they have to (well, some do, but that is a whole other debate). I also believe that if a person truly believes in God then he or she will want to help others (at least, I would hope). :)

I have found that most people like to help others if they are able to. :)

To paraphrase C.S. Lewis (since I'm too lazy to try to find the exact quote), that's kind of like asking which blade of a pair of scissors is the most important.
