You could be right. I just know from experience that the people most likely to NOT let go are Christians and it makes me sad to see. Elders well over 80 or 90 suffering like you have no clue and the family thinks they will get better. I mean, come on folks. We are finite creatures. Like it or not, we die. And I agree that euthanasia should be legal but that will never happen as long as this country is largely Christian.
I think you're correlating the two because most people in this society are Christian. Euthanasia/assisted suicide is legal in some US states and countries in the West. It's not legal in most of the world, so I don't think this is really a Christian issue.

Yes, the people who taught you about Christianity were sadly mistaken about what the religion is. many ex-Christians or some, also taught what they thought was 'christianity' of course you would leave that false paradigm, anyone would if they were after something more real etc.
This isn't the thread to go into the problems even in these statements you have made, though,

This thread is about joyless religions which I find Christianity to be. And btw, do not presume to know me as my mother has been a devout Christian her entire life. She is lovely and exudes joy about her views of God. And furthermore, she respects my choices to be Buddhist.

That might be true for you but certainly not for me. I find joy in many things, not the least of which is nature, spirituality, my family and friends, etc.
Hiya JOStories, the basket full of bliss that is me can almost certainly say that Rick was being quite sarcastic. I rather suspect he means exactly the opposite. @Rick O'Shez (Type size increased for your tired eyes, Jo. :D)

Which religions are joyless?

Islam and Christianity as interpreted by the Amish.

The former because it severely limits the freedoms of its women and prescribes primitive, sadistic punishments for violations of its credo.

The latter because of the internal hypocrisy of its practitioners. I've personally observed the oppression and, actually, recently read a very accurate book about one such former member's experience - Tears of the Silenced by Misty Griffin.

I had forgotten the Amish and their ilk.
they are not the only faith that throws out members who do not conform. Even breaking up families in the process.

I don't "know". I said that I "think". Its down to God to judge each person :) but we do know he has a forgiving spirit and has a perfect sense of justice.
And how do you know that with 100% certainty? Kent, I can appreciate and totally support your choice of faith but when you post things like this, you say it as if it were true for all people and that is simply not the case. One needs to respect the fact that many others have chosen different paths.

I do agree that the choice of an Amish life is far from easy. I have visited the Lancaster area of PA and was blessed to be asked to share dinner served by an Amish family. It was fascinating and absolutely delicious. The mother was very happy and proud of her children and her life. However, that said, I am more than sure there are many who hate the life. No electricity, no heat save wood, its not easy to live that way. But for some, it is what makes them happy.

Religion, according to one definition is the sigh of the oppressed. Religion is basically a way to get out of the oppression. Thus Religion has to be joyless.

All organized religions are joyless, they all make us miserable, just the way they want us to be.

Not when you add a bit of "Source". ;)

The puritans were considered a very joyless religion, with heavy restrictions on alcohol, dress , music , dancing and contact between the sexes.
Muslims seem to follow a similar life style.

like the puritans they seem to want to ensure every one follows that same joylessness.

discuss.........

First, there are different versions of Islam.

Then, It depends on the type of Joy you are concerned with.

After that, to be faced with the truth will rarely be something joyful. Let's face it. You came to this life alone. After some time, you will leave this life alone. In the time between these two ends, you will be faced with many problems, And you will either lose those whom you love, or they will lose you. There is little to be joyful for in this life. Also Some types of joys are nothing but escaping from facing the reality.

WOW what a dismal prospect, and outlook.
I hope All Muslims do not believe that.
I would give them little reason to enjoy life or love their fellow man.
